McJaygate continues: Cutler trade talks reopened?

Another round of "he said, he said" has begun after a conference call between the Denver Broncos upper management triumvirate and Jay Cutler on Monday. A source has told Mike Klis of the Denver Post that the Broncos have set themselves up so that if Cutler does not show for Monday's "voluntary" offseason workouts, the trade talks will be reopened.

According to the source, coach Josh McDaniels said during the call that no player is untradable, and later that the team looked forward to seeing Cutler this upcoming Monday at the conditioning workouts. This thinly-veiled threat should be pretty clear to most observers as a warning that Cutler needs to get his act together in order to stay in the good graces of the team, otherwise he'll be cast away in a trade.

Interestingly, the teams rumored to be involved in Cutler trades in the recent weeks have all stayed away from signing a different option at quarterback since then. Furthermore, the New York Jets really need a quarterback, and so do the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Minnesota Vikings. The Chicago Bears and Detroit Lions have what they think is a suitable starting quarterback, but both teams would probably be overjoyed to have a Pro Bowl-caliber QB who will only turn 26 years old in the days following the NFL draft this year.

While the last trade rumors regarding Cutler became public and made the situation in Denver get real ugly, real fast, the team will probably look to keep things a bit more clandestine until they can fully flesh out a deal this time.
