Veteran contender Kali Meehan (38-4,31 ko’s) won the vacant World Boxing Foundation heavyweight title with a first round TKO of fellow New South Welshman Michael Kirby (9-4-2, 5 ko’s) at Southport Sharks on Queensland’s Gold Coast on Friday night.. As usual the bustling Kirby swarmed Meehan, forcing the big Fijian born fighter to the ropes but Mehan was ble to punch himself out and when he got some distance was able to sting Kirby with a sharp right. As Kirby pushed forward with a loose cross arm smother, Meehan drove in an uppercut which buckled the knees of the “Iron Rhino” momentarily. Kirby fell into ropes where he caught a right behind the ear and referee Chris Anderson stepped between the two and waved it off. Time: 1.03.
