It's no secret that the Golden State Warriors have been a much better team without their former captain, Stephen Jackson. Not only has the ball movement improved, but the overall chemistry has gotten higher and defense has been more efficient. Now that one of the bums is gone, it's time for the Warriors to trade a player that they should have never signed in the first place: Corey Maggette. Maggette's contract could be the worst in the league, he puts his stats before winning, and is injury prone. Well maybe the injury prone part is not that bad, since the Warriors are a better team when he does not play. The Warriors went into Dallas, and beat the Mavericks. One of the reasons for the win was because Don Nelson did not coach, but we'll leave that for another article. The main reason the Warriors won was because the youth played unselfishly, played defense, and played with heart. Those are some traits that the overpaid sixth man does not comprehend. While Maggette may provide scoring, that is not what Golden State needs right now. If you want an example that stats are misleading, look at Maggette. He averages 17 points per game and numerous free throw attempts, but what you do not see in the box score is the number of times he has killed the Warriors' momentum. When the Warriors are down by a big margin, they usually put up a fight and make little runs to comeback near the end of the game. The young guys put up quality scoring streaks and display acts of teamwork. But what could be their only mistake during the runs? Passing the ball to Maggette. The lazy Maggette gets to the free throw line, but countless times during the game he chucks up random jump shots. Most of the jumps shots are bricks that do not even come close to going in. The jump shots and ball-hogging are just a part of the problem Maggette causes. His defense is below average. He may draw a few charges once in a while, but he is a great flopper, something you should not be proud of. Corey also turns the ball over more than you would expect. Some turnovers are because he lowers his shoulder while attacking the rim, but most of them are because of lazy passes and low-IQ plays. Maggette has also averaged 1.8 assists per game since wearing a Golden State jersey. That is not a number you want from your veteran guard. This is a memo to the Golden State Warriors, Corey Maggette needs to be traded because he is not a player the Warriors need, especially with his horrendous contract. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/298568-memo-to-golden-state-warriors-corey-maggette-must-go Written by me.
Corey Regrette lawlz I knew it was a terrible signing. He's been exposed, if he can barely function in Don Nelson's offense he can't function anywhere. The guy is like a smaller version of Zach Randolph. He puts up pretty stats but those stats don't translate into wins. Never understood why you guys went after him anyways, good luck with him for the next four years, I don't see anybody willing to trade for the guy unless you get an equally horrible package in return.
Mags could thrive is a system like what Memphis has with a PG who can distribute the ball. I really don't like to see the ball in Mags' hands because he's not a creator and more of a black hole. He does better with a PG who can set it up for him so he knows where he has to go to get the ball. We got Curry now, so I think he should be paired up with Curry, but Curry has to learn how to direct people to their spots (something he's not learning how to do under Nelson).
I watched this pair recently. You know why this doesn't work? Because Maggette does not respect him and does not give him the ball. Maggette gets a rebound and even though Curry is waiting for the outlet, there's no outlet coming. Maggette simply ignores him and figures he can dribble up himself and launch without the rookie.
If I was Curry, I would not worry that this is a sign of disrespect. Maggette does that with everybody.
Maggette has got to go. He's all numbers. He's an Antwan Jamison, only not as good and more injury prone. We need a guy like Brandon Roy. 4 year college player. Not all that athletic, but gets the job done with numbers and intangibles. Plus, he plays defense, not just offense, and he makes others around him better. What does Maggette do? He plays one side of the court most nights even at a natural position of small forward and he's selfish as f! If the Warriors are going to piss away money, go after guys like Joe Johnson or Brandon Roy or if it comes down to it guys like Mike Miller or Hedo Turkoglu or John Salmons... Jeez... we keep going after the wrong players with the cap money... and they just end up repeating the mistakes of the past... And what about the year we drafted Ike Diogu? I was happy with that pick, but I was also happy with Andrew Bynum, Danny Granger, and Gerald Green. We want safety, go with Granger! We want extraordinary talent with size and great upside, go Bynum. We want a swingman who could be the next Tracy McGrady, go after Gerald Green.... wtf Warriors... you pick the safe pick when you don't want to pick the safe pick. You pick the risky pick when it's a dumb pick.... I want our management to at least have better judgment than me, the fan! But the obviously have worse with the Mags signing and blowing away all of our cap so quickly... The Warriors can't do anything right can they? Now I wonder about Stephen Curry. One wonders what would happen if we pissed away the second rounders in the year we drafted Ellis.
Shane Battier is the ideal guy to be in Magette's place. Hard nosed, playes defense, moves the ball, can score if others are having a tough night but doesn't look for his own shots. He's everything that Magette isn't
Don't have anything more to add than what you guys have already. Maggette was a mistake. A financial mistake and a talent mistake.
Does he lead the league in ill-advised pull up jumpers and uncontested turnovers? Or does Ricky Davis have him beat? Oh well, either way, its pretty bad company. How does management not see this? There's a reason he's got the worst stats in the league and he played selfishly on a Clippers that never made the playoffs. Its like baseball, rather than spend all the $$ on one free agent, you're better off with a couple low priced FAs or trades trying to find a nugget, Chris Anderson? Nocioni? Anthony Parker? Jamario Moon?
While I'm not a fan of Maggette's at all, I wouldn't have nearly as big a problem with him had they signed him for what he was actually worth, what any other team in the league would have paid him, which is somewhere in the $5M -$6M a year range for maybe 3-4 years. But instead the Warriors shot themselves in the foot as only they can, literally bidding up against only themselves to that horrendous cap-crippling $50M deal. If he was signed at $6M a year for 4 years not only would he probably be worth keeping (it's easier to keep that player benched when necessary, for one thing), but he would be easily tradeable right now as well, if things weren't working out. Good management doesn't overreact and make panic moves, ours does unfortunately.
One of the problems with Maggette and why he makes the coaching staff and front office delusional is that he seems like a great guy, he keeps his body in shape (despite being hampered by injuries), and he's a "veteran" willing to come off the bench. It's all of these things that have the staff clinging onto him as if he's some sort of anchor on this young team when in fact the things that matter (everything we've discussed here), he does horribly. I think his highlight play of his Warrior career was a bounce pass to a streaking Ellis on a fast break against the Magic for an assist. Did not see that one coming.
Yeah, or if Nelson just didn't play him so much and out of position. The game against Houston, he played him at 5 for the majority of the 4th quarter.
Playing Maggette at any position wouldn't get him to play better team basketball. The ball rarely touches anybody else once he goes inside and there's no play to be had there. When there's nothing inside, he goes for that broken jumpshot of his. I don't actually keep count, but it feels like he's 20-25% chance of making it when he goes for anything deeper than 20 feet away from the basket. He should pass the ball so teammates can set him up. But you guys are right, we're not utilizing him as well as we could by playing him at the 3. He's been a good sport because Don Nelson tends to frustrate anybody who plays small forward and above. I'm almost wishing we had Ricky Davis instead, but not the clippers kind, the Boston Celtics 6th man kind. Maggette is more stable of a personality though. Great for when you know the Warriors will be losing.
Charley Rosen broke down a game last year where close to 40% of the time when Maggette got the ball over halfcourt he either shot, got fouled or turned it over. If that's not a black hole on the court, I don't know what is. If you play any kind of hoops (I get to run 1/week); that's disheartening. Once you pass it to a guy, you've got no chance of seeing the ball again. How fun is that?
I rent a neighborhood gym and run 4 on 4 fullcourt for about an hour and a half. Wish I could play more.
