The Steelers won their regular-season opener today in dramatic fashion.

Rashard Mendenhall broke free for a 50-yard touchdown run in overtime as the Steelers beat the Falcons 15-9 at Heinz Field.

Mendenhall's burst came on the Steelers' first offensive play of overtime, and capped a 120-yard rushing performance by the third-year veteran.

The last time the Steelers and Falcons met at Heinz Field in 2002, they played to 34-34 tie. The Steelers visit the Tennessee Titans next Sunday.

The Steelers had a chance to win the game in regulation after a diving interception by Troy Polamalu set up the offense at Atlanta's 30-yard line.

The Steelers could not get a first down, however, and Jeff Reed missed a 40-yard field goal.

Quarterback Dennis Dixon completed 18 of 26 passes for 236 yards and in interception in his second career start.

Hines Ward achieved several milestones today, going over 11,000 yards receiving for his career. Ward, who caught six passes for 108 yards, also turned in his 26th career 100-yard receiving game, establishing a new Steelers record in that category.

Nose tackle Casey Hampton (hamstring) and left tackle Max Starks (ankle) each left the game with an injury and did not return.
