Are athletes not seeking this because there could be a chance of complications?

I think this is beyond last resort. This type of surgery just doesn't seem like it would end well with a professional athlete. The average NBA player runs about 5 miles per game, factor in changing of speeds and leaping, this has bad news written all over it.

So something like this actually could hurt his chances? Just was seeing if it's been done before.

This would end his playing career. It is the type of surgery you do to walk more comfortably or go down stairs with less knee pain.

This was discussed in January, before Roy met with the Chicago Bulls doctor who is an expert in this area. He was told that meniscus transplant wasn't an option for him if he wanted to continue playing ball. He then decided to have both knees scoped in order to clean them out and try to get back to playing. There's no magic bullet to fix Brandon's knees, unfortunately:

Maybe we should cut off a leg and hope it grows back, ya know like a crab. There had to be a first crab back in the day who gave it a shot!

So they're giving him the kind of surgery which will remove all doubt that he can play. Maybe the reason is to collect on the insurance. Maybe they can't collect till it's 100% certain that he can't play even a minute per game.
