The World Team Cup is the international team championship of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP). The tournament has been contested annually since 1978 and is generally considered to be second most prestigious men's team competition in tennis after the Davis Cup. Every year, the eight nations whose top two male players have achieved the highest combined placings in the men's world rankings at the end of the previous year are invited to compete for the cup. The competition is played on clay courts in Düsseldorf, Germany. The event is generally regarded as the sports highlight of the social scene in the Düsseldorf area. It attracts around 75,000 visitors every year and is televised to over 160 countries. The event's main sponsor is the ARAG Insurance Group, and its present sponsored name is the "ARAG World Team Cup".

Defending champions Serbia slip to second defeat 2009 ARAG ATP World Team Championship winners Serbia saw their chances of retaining their title wiped away as they slipped to their second straight defeat against France. With the two country's Red Group fixture deadlocked at 1-1, Serbia began the day knowing they had to win the remaining doubles match to stay in with a chance of defending their crown. That chance looked alive when Viktor Troicki and Nenad Zimonjic, who helped Serbia lift the trophy last year, broke Jeremy Chardy and Nicolas Mahut twice in the opening set. The French pair replied each time though and, after winning the first set on a tiebreak, eased to a 7-6(4) 6-2 win.
