The Mets have put Ruben Gotay on waivers, essentially ending his time w/ the team. They were hoping for him to be the backup to Jose Reyes at short, but he had trouble there defensively in the spring. The fact that they still are looking for corner outfield help as well as a backup to Carlos Delgado sealed his fate. Had been rumored for awhile but is now official. Ruben didn't take it very well- <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>"I thought I did a good job last year," Gotay told multiple news outlets, including the New York Post and Daily News, on Thursday morning. "I didn't deserve this."</div> http://newyork.mets.mlb.com/news/article.j...sp&c_id=nym They still have about four guys who can play second base, but two are old (Jose Valentin and Damion Easley), one can't run (Luis Castillo) and the other can't hit (Anderson Hernandez). Gotay can still help another team though, so it will be interesting to see where he ends up.
Just signed w/ the Braves. I'm sure that makes the Mets real happy. http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/mets/2008...grab-gotay.html
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Charles)</div><div class='quotemain'>Just signed w/ the Braves. Between Kelly Johnson, Prado, & the utility guy they got from the Cubs.... the Braves really don't need another 2B IMO unless KJ is going back to the OF as I've speculated they should. <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (ghoti)</div><div class='quotemain'>I'm surprised they couldn't trade him.</div> Wasn't he one of the players the Twins wanted for Johan & the mess refused to part ways..... then. ROFL!
It appears Infante (utility INF mentioned above) is injured and Gotay is his replacment... ATL sent Thorman down to Richmond.
The move still doesn't make much sense for the Braves. He can't hit lefties and it seems like the only starts he will get will be against them. If he doesn't beat out Prado, he won't even be around when Infante comes back. The best fit for him is a team that either wants to start him every day or platoon him with a righty 2B. He's not much of a utility player.
