I'm goofing around on Wikipedia and found this!

In November 2006, on ESPN Radio's Dan Patrick Show, former Cowboy Michael Irvin made a scheduled appearance to talk football. When the discussion shifted to Romo, Irvin stated Romo's athletic ability must be due to African-American heritage and made references to Romo's maternal relatives being involved with "slave brothers." Irvin later apologized, stating that he was joking like players in a locker room.

He said this in November, but I don't recall having heard anything about it. How does Irvin get off scott free for these remarks? If Irvin were white, I bet he would have gotten thrown under the bus, run over and backed over and run over again for good measure. I smell a double standard.

Wow - he got away with saying that? [IMG]

Yeah, that's a double standard if I've ever seen one.

I heard it then. The playmaker is on the DP show every monday about my lunchtime.

Every time he's on, Irvin always sounds like he's done a few lines... & I don't mean reciting Shakespeare.

Rush Limbaugh, "the media desires that black QB's play well" YOU'RE FIRED!!!!!!!!!!

Mike Irvin, "if Romo has athletic ability, he must be part African-American" Here's a bonus!

There is a difference between those 2 statements. Rush was just telling the truth, Irvin was spouting ignorance. In fact the media is still very desirous of black QBs to do well. Look at vick, they cant wait to crown him. Look at VY, he has a 60 QB rating but since rest of team is winning they are heaping the praise on him.

This double standard surprises you? It's been this way as long as I can remember. Mike Tyson was calling a white reporter a cracker over and over again during one of his tirades. He also made other white racial slurs. He didn't get persecuted for it. Don't count on this double standard being fixed anytime soon either.

Of course, Limbaugh is right... he's a conservative. Its probably the only time that pill poppin' water carrier will ever be close to being correct.

VY is a more complete QB now than Ron Mexico will ever be.

For the record; I'm not white. I am a caucasian-american.

I'm not sure if I agree with the Limbaugh statement. Yes, Michael Vick is a media darling and Vince Young is getting too much credit too fast, but it's white boy, Tony Romo, that has already had an NFL Network special. I thought after guys like Doug Williams and Warren Moon that we could get beyond the race discussion when it comes to playing QB, unless there are actually people who still think that black players can't play the position. In my opinion, the infatuation with Michael Vick is over his running skills and not his race. If Michael Vick could throw accurately with consistancy, then perhaps the hype would be warranted because he would be something special, but, after all of these years, I seriously doubt that will ever happen.

The problem that I have is that white guys can't discuss issues of race without getting fired while minorities can say whatever without consequence. Perhaps a big deal shouldn't be made about Irvin, but if your not going to throw him under the bus for his stupid comments then show the same compassion across the board regardless of race. While I think what Limbaugh was saying was incorrect, he wasn't using racial slurs so why did he have to be removed from the show. Personally, I didn't mind because I'm not crazy about having politics getting mixed up in my football, but I don't think what he said was so outrageous that he should lose his job. It certainly wasn't as offensive as Irvin's comments.
