Michigan wide receiver Darryl Stonum will redshirt the 2011 season as part of his discipline for a drunken driving arrest in May, coach Brady Hoke announced Sunday.

Stonum, who ranked second on the team in receiving (49 catches for 633 yards) last season, pleaded guilty June 3 to operating while visibly impaired following a May 6 arrest. Hoke indefinitely suspended Stonum following the arrest but left the door open to a possible return for the season if Stonum met several conditions.

"While it would be great to have Darryl on the field this season, we feel it is in his best interest and the best interest of our program for him to redshirt," Hoke said in a prepared statement. "Darryl will continue to be an important part of our team and family. He has done everything we have asked him to do, but our number one priority is to help Darryl grow as a person."

Stonum, who received a one year suspended sentence and entered a court sobriety program, received another drunken driving charge early in his Michigan career and served three days in jail in 2010 for probation violations. He will have one year of eligibility remaining in 2012.
