<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">MIAMI ? The multibillionaire owner could have been an imposing presence in the Miami Heat locker room.

Yet Micky Arison, the man rich enough to sign the paychecks of Shaquille O'Neal and Pat Riley and have plenty left over, stood quietly behind Stan Van Gundy last Saturday as the coach congratulated his team on its sweep of the Washington Wizards.

In his 10 years as managing general partner of the Heat, Arison never has intruded on a coach's locker-room speech, not even while his handpicked savior, Riley, ran the team.

"I happened to walk behind Stan, so the players could all see me," Arison said. "Stan didn't know I was in the room. I listened to Stan's whole speech. I had never heard a coach speak to the team."

This was one of Arison's proudest moments, and you could see it in his face. The same look, perhaps, as when a bottle of champagne is smashed across the bow of one of his cruise ships, marking the vessel's christening.
