<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Mike Martz, known for his pedal-to-the-metal approach as a play-caller, is scheduled to interview today for the 49ers' offensive-coordinator position. Martz, dismissed last week as Detroit's offensive coordinator, is the second to interview for the position since 49ers Coach Mike Nolan fired Jim Hostler after the season. Former Georgia Tech coach Chan Gailey, a two-time NFL offensive coordinator who also served as Dallas Cowboys head coach, interviewed with Nolan on Saturday. Martz, 56, has coached for more than 30 years at the college and NFL levels and has worked with such quarterbacks as Trent Green, Kurt Warner and Marc Bulger. He developed the "Greatest Show on Turf" offense during his seven years with the St. Louis Rams, the last six as head coach. The Rams rode the passing-oriented offense to a Super Bowl victory in 1999 while Martz was offensive coordinator. Nolan has said he is seeking an experienced NFL coordinator to take the reins of a unit that produced the fewest yards and points under Hostler, who was calling plays at the NFL level for the first time. Nolan also has indicated an interest in interviewing Cam Cameron, who was fired as the Miami Dolphins coach following a 1-15 season, and Brian Billick, who was let go as the Baltimore Ravens coach. The 49ers also will be looking for a quarterbacks coach after Cal hired Frank Cignetti on Sunday. • Rex Ryan made his bid to become the Baltimore Ravens' third head coach, interviewing for several hours with the team's search committee. The son of former NFL head coach Buddy Ryan, he coached the Ravens' defense to rankings of fifth, first and sixth over the past three seasons.</div> Source: SJ Mercury News He would not be my first choice to coach the offense. However, Alex Smith has been a huge disappointment with the current system the 49ers are running. In college he looked like a stud because of the spread offense, and Martz does call for more passing and 3 WR formations that could help Alex. The main problem for the 49ers is their inability to pass protect. There's no Orlando Pace here and I'm not sure Martz's offense would work unless the 49ers vastly improve their past protection.
I bet Frank Gore is praying right now that this doesn't happen. I'm pretty sure he actually likes carrying the ball

However, the 49ers don't play on turf either and Gore is more of a power back. I wish the 49ers would bring in Cowher to coach this team and build around Gore.

Appearantly, MM has been hired by the 9ers. I just can't see Alex Smith running his scheme. Is it too late to declare AS a bust? Cam Cameron may be the next Rams OC. The Rams love phins that have been tossed back or cut lose.
I'm trying to figure out why they rushed into hiring him? Was he that great in the interview to not listen to what anyone else was selling? Was there any attempt to interview Bill Cowher for the head coaching spot and dump Nolan? This team has some workable pieces ideal for Cowher's smash-mouth brand of football. Gore is one of the better battering rams in the league, PWill and Cowher is a love fest, and hopefully Cowher can find the inner beast Vernon Davis has in him. Plus Cowher would put the short leash on Alex Smith and not allow him to lose games. Limit him to 20 to 25 pass attempts a game and give him a possession receiver who can be his safety blanket if he can't find anyone downfield. Martz will be a 180 of Cowher and I don't think his style of offense is going to work on grass and in the wind. 49ers better upgrade that O-line this offseason.
Cowher has consistently told teams that he wants to take a 2 year break from the NFL. Arthur Blank was ready to throw money at him and I'm guessing that Daniel Snyder is going to try his best persuasion tactics on him.
