I've been reading a lot of mini-camp reports coming out of Green Bay and Mike McCarthy just doesn't seem to have a handle on what's going on. More than 14 veterans, mostly starters, missed this last mini-camp. When asked about it, McCarthy said that most of them were missing things for "personal reasons." What's that all about? Is that like calling in sick to work?

Yeah, I realize that these mini-camps are technically voluntary, but Favre was there. Mike Sherman certainly wouldn't have stood for this. He also wouldn't be answering so many reporter questions with "I don't know" and "I'm not sure" and "I'd have to look into that" and "I'll have to call those guys this weekend and see what's going on." So far, McCarthy seems to be like a deer in the headlights with his first head coaching gig.

I hope he gets the house in order soon. Right now he's really starting to scare me...

This is all the more reason that the Packers should have made Jim Bates the head coach. He certainly wouldn't tolerate all of the nonsense going on in Green Bay right now. *sigh*

14 missed the first day and 4 came on later in the Day. Since it's a new coach, it's a lot more Hectic with the schedule. McCarthy spreads things out more, where as Sherman had it after the Draft and once in June and then everyone went home. Players need to get their schedules worked out I guess.

    1. AJ Hawk is missing because he's finishing school and won't be able to jump in until June 9th.
    2. Al Harris is holding out for a new contract but says he'll report to Training camp with or without a new deal and play this year but says next year will be different.
    3. Charles Woodson is on vacation in Europe. This is the one that worries me but he is training there.
    4. Clifton is excuse because of injuries.
    5. Rod Gardner - I'm not sure why but I think it's dumb on his part.
    6. Donald Driver - Had trouble getting into town but showed up last night.
    7. Ahmad Carroll - Came and has now left for something and will return next week.
    8. Bubba Franks - Is there now
    9. Mark Roman - Upset with team because they brought in Manuel without letting him no
    10. Corey Williams - Not there as far as I know but should be soon. He needs to be there, I'm hearing good things about him at the first 2.
    11. Ryan Pickett - Not sure why he's not there. Maybe something to do with moving to Green Bay.
    12. Nick Collins - I believe he's reported.
    13. KGB - Haven?t heard if he showed up or not.

I got 13 of them. I don't know or heard anything on the other one but not bad for an update hey?

As for McCarthy, you need to be hear and see him. His practices are much better than Sherman?s. (I'm not ripping on Sherman but his practices were kind of soft especially with Favre) McCarthy makes everyone practice equally hard. He's a hard nose coach. Slowly I'm starting to take a liking to him. He also let?s his coaches coach where as Sherman would but into everything according to one media source.

Also the locker room mood is great, from what's being reported. Sherman had someone in the locker room write down every single thing a player said to the media, and the players didn't feel comfortable inside the locker room all the time. Now the players are seen just making small chat. Favre and LS Rob Davis were talking about farming. So the players can slowly build a family like atmosphere which I guess they couldn't do under Sherman.

Overall though things have gone pretty well. The 1st Day was an exaggerated total.. Players had trouble getting into town. Now only about 4 or 5 vets are missing.

What was so great about it? He explains the missing veterans, but it's not like he can defend Mike McCarthy from not knowing anything about what's going on around him.

Seriously... Check out every interview with him since he got named head coach. You'll lose count of all of the "I don't know" and "I'm not sure" and "I'll have to check" answers to reporter questions after about 300. The guy's a moron... (McCarthy, not Porky)

My post was misleading... I was just updating you and FP on how where the Packers have been. I wasn't defending McCarthy.

I must say, I really wanted Bates as Head Coach and I still think he would of been the better Head Coach.

With that said, I watched some of Sherman's practices and McCarthy's and McCarthy's are much better than Sherman's in terms of what they get done and how they are ran.

It's not about what you do during the practices, it's about Sundays and Mondays and the occastional Saturday and Thursday games [IMG]

McCarthy has a ways ago though for me to come around too him. Until then, I'm just going to dream about what it would've been with Bates as the Head Coach.

Thanks for the updates, Porky. It's nice to have an eye witness who's actually IN Green Bay! Especially now that I'm in Houston... [IMG]

I'll give McCarthy every chance in the world. Like you said, winning on Sunday, Monday, Saturday and Thursday is what really matters. He can prove it to me on the field. Off the field, thus far, he's shown me very little.

    Fingers crossed!

Yeah I'm expecting 6 or 7 wins this year and 2nd or 3rd in the divsion. GB is pretty much rebuilding, outside of Favre being there. This a young team.

14 is a whole lot of people! John Fox has had everyone at mini camp except Keyshawn Johnson for like 2 practices for personal reasons.

Are there going to be any holdouts expected heading into training camp?

The only guy who could possibly hold out would be Al Harris. But I don't think he will. The Packers just re-did Donald Driver's deal. If Harris plays his cards right and doesn't be a punk, he'll get a new deal, too. But Thompson won't address the issue if he tries holding out.

Harris made a statement a couple of days ago and said he'll be at training camp for sure. He said he'd like a new deal during the year or befor the start of the season. He said if a year passes and he doesn't have a new deal then next year he might think aboug holding out of Training camp like McKenzie did.
