Turns out that Paul Millsap, the Utah Jazz's No. 47 overall pick last summer out of tiny Louisiana Tech, plays with that same kind of demon in his head ? that of the only three-time NCAA rebounding champion who was passed by again and again on June 28.
He is so unassuming, it doesn't seem that he'd be seething inside.
About the only time he shows emotion, said 10-year veteran guard teammate Derek Fisher, is when he gets one of those blocked shots. Then, said Fisher, Millsap often says something a little unprintable, but for the most part, he stays true to that "low-key" personality.
"It's amazing," added Jazz coach Jerry Sloan, comparing his coach-ability to that other Louisiana Tech Jazzman of 18 years, Karl Malone. "You don't hear anything out of him except what he does on the court."
But Saturday night, after getting a huge blocked shot with 3:03 left in overtime and career highs of 18 points and 10 rebounds ? six points and two boards before fouling out in the extra period ? in a Jazz 120-117 overtime Delta Center win over the Phoenix Suns, Millsap twice mentioned being a second-rounder and admitted it motivates him a bit.
"It does to a certain extent," he said. "I just want to show everybody what I can do."
But he also said that being taken as the second of two second-round picks by the Jazz is a blessing.
"Everything worked out. I love this system. I love this program. I've got a lot of good teammates and a lot of good coaches. Being drafted in the second round is not always a good thing, but it was a good thing for me."</div>
