The Champions Tour unveils the new Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic this week.

The tournament will be played at Fallen Oak, a highly-rated Tom Fazio design featuring a wide range of natural features including dramatic elevation changes along the Gulf Coast.

The Mississippi Gulf Resort comes at a point in the Champions Tour season when a more definable form among the players is beginning to take place. The anticipation of a major championship always amps up the level of competition and preparation.

Only two events remain -- in Mississippi and the Regions Charity Classic in Birmingham, Ala. -- before the season's first major, the PGA Championship at Colorado Golf Club in suburban Denver, May 24-30.

This week's tournament was established by a consortium of Gulf Coast businesses for the purposes of promoting the area and providing charitable dollars to the Habitat for Humanity Mississippi Gulf Coast, Inc.

Champions Tour event begins in grand style

The Beau Rivage spared no expense at Tuesday night’s Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic Pairings Party.

Meanwhile, the Champions Tour players took over at Wednesday’s Pro-Am at Fallen Oak.

The party down yonder in Saucier has officially begun.

Gov. Haley Barbour told the crowd Tuesday night, “If you can’t have fun on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, it’s your own fault.”

Trust me, everybody had fun, Governor.

That’s the way we roll in the South, especially when legends visit. Fred Funk and Peter Jacobsen were having fun. Imagine that. Sandy Lyle didn’t want to go home.

Ross takes alternate route to Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic

What’s the difference in an exempt status on the Champions Tour and conditional exempt status?

In the case of John Ross, at least this week, approximately 1,700 miles.

That’s the distance the West Virginia golfer covered in a three-day span leading up to his 2-under-par 70 in the first round of the Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic Friday. He arrived at Fallen Oak in time to participate in Monday’s qualifier at The Bridges, during which he became the fifth alternate.

Frost pulls into tie for lead at Gulf Resort Classic

The winds of change were blowing at Fallen Oak Golf Club in Saturday's second round of the Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic.

David Frost and Gary Hallberg each shot course-record 6-under-par 66s, and Frost moved into a three-way tie for the lead with Brad Bryant (68) and David Eger (68), all two shots clear of the field at 8 under.

Jay Haas, who also shot a 4-under 68 Saturday, is at 6 under. Four players -- Tom Kite, Joey Sindelar, Rod Spittle and Tommy Armour III -- are at 5 under. Hallberg is at 4 under with Mark James, Fred Funk and Eduardo Romero.

Eighteen players are within six shots of the lead heading into today's final round of the Champions Tour event.

Eger wins Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic

When it got right down to it, David Eger had the statistics -- and the score -- that mattered most in the inaugural Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic at Fallen Oak Golf Club.

Eger shot in the 60s all three days and his 3-under 69 in rainy, windy conditions Sunday was good enough to edge Tommy Armour III by a stroke for his first Champions Tour victory since 2005.

He finished with an 11-under-par score of 205.
