Damn...I'll be traveling home at that time. Anywho, there's some definite talent available. Some of the recognizable names that won't be taken are Juan Pablo Angel (out of contract), Danny Allsopp (returning to Australia), Jonathan Bornstein (transferring to Mexico), Julian de Guzman, Blaise Nkufo, Geovanni, and Ljunberg (not worth it). I think Schelotto fits in the out of contract boat. Robbie Findley is not likely, unless someone can strike a deal with him as he's looking for work in Europe. Ives tweeted that Findley has a Portland connection from his days with Oregon State. I could be overrating the guy, but I think Pat Phelan will be a strong pick for whoever gets him. I had expected him to go last year when Philly had a shot at him, but they went for Brad Knighton instead. Other likely picks are Andre Akpan (Colorado), Wells Thompson (Colorado), Anthony Wallace (Colorado), Kyle Davies (FC Dallas), Dax McCarty (FC Dallas), Adam Cristman (DC United), Joseph Ngwenya (Houston), Dominic Oduro (Houston), Corey Ashe (Houston), Jimmy Conrad (Kansas City), Brian Perk (LA Galaxy), Zak Boggs (New England), Seth Sinovic (New England), Alex Nimo (Salt Lake), Arturo Alvarez (San Jose), Ramiro Corales (San Jose), Sanna Nyassi (Seattle), Chad Barrett (Toronto), Faud Ibrahim (Toronto), and O'Brian White (Toronto). If Vancouver wants to, they can put together one of the best centerback pairs in the league if they add either Conrad or McCarty with DeMerit. I think Portland will grab Alex Nimo after he featured there 45 times over two loan stints.
Here's Ives' projection for Fox Soccer. These things tend to be so difficult to predict that these are almost irrelevant, but they're always fun to think about. Portland looks really good with this projection. Hall (from a trade) and Ashe on the wings would be terrific with Angel up front. McCarty and Conrad can hold down the fort in front of Knighton. Thomas and Wallace can cover outside. Thomas is getting up in years, but the young Wallace started to establish himself as a player after a midseason deal to Colorado. Brunner has played well over the last two seasons with Columbus and could feature if Portland opts for three in the back. Its not done frequently in MLS, but having a vet like Conrad and McCarty's skills make it a possibility with a 6-4 guy in the mix. Ring provides an option in defensive midfield. Warner is a prospect with Portland roots. For Vancouver, Nkufo provides a legitimate threat to lead the league in scoring and can help with the development of White. With Schelotto providing service, it will be easy for both to bag goals in bunches. Nyassi is a pretty solid winger. If this happened, Vancouver would have a solid defensive presence as well with Pat Phelan doing the heavy lifting behind Schelotto. Davies would spend a lot of time learning from DeMerit in central defense while Robinson and Ward can cover the fullback positions. Onstad is a Vancouver native.
PORTLAND, Ore. -- Portland Timbers coach John Spencer and general manager Gavin Wilkinson were all smiles following Wednesday’s MLS Expansion Draft. The Timbers spent the day acquiring young, talented primarily defensive-minded players with careers still on the upswing. The expansion club used the No. 1 pick to select midfielder Dax McCarty, who played in Sunday’s MLS Cup for FC Dallas. Within hours, they traded him away to D.C. United for 22-year-old defender Rodney Wallace and a fourth-round SuperDraft choice. Following that selection, Portland picked up young, talented players Eric Brunner (Columbus Crew), Adam Moffat (Columbus Crew), Anthony Wallace (Colorado Rapids) and David Horst (Real Salt Lake). Brunner, Wallace and Horst are all back line players while Moffat is a midfielder. (Wallace was traded back to Colorado.) “We came out of the expansion draft like, in our eyes, there was only one team in it,” Spencer said. “We got the guys that we wanted. It’s not pie-in-the-sky. It’s not a smokescreen. We got the guys we were looking to get.” BURNABY, British Columbia — The Vancouver Whitecaps leaned into the attack when selecting 10 players in the MLS Expansion Draft on Wednesday. “I think getting the right blend of experience and youth and leveraging deals to come was important,” said Whitecaps FC Director of Soccer Operations Tom Soehn. “I think in the categories we had laid out, we checked them off today.” The Whitecaps opened their selections with young winger Sanna Nyassi of the Seattle Sounders. He was then traded to the Colorado Rapids in exchange for an international spot. Nyassi was one of two Sounders players snagged by Vancouver, joined by central midfielder Nathan Sturgis, who earned a regular starter's role in the second half of the 2010 season. http://www.mlssoccer.com/
I cannot for the life of me figure out what the hell these two were doing. Tons of talent available, tons of talent drafted, not a lot left on either roster. Portland drafted a terrific backline led by the established Dax McCarty to go with Eric Brunner in the middle and Anthony Wallace at right back. Apparently there are some rumblings that the Bornstein to America deal might be on the rocks, giving Portland a potential all-star at left back. McCarty was dealt to DC United for Rodney Wallace, who is a nice player, but keeping McCarty would have been a much better choice in my opinion. Anthony Wallace was then dealt back to Colorado as he was repetitive with Rodney Wallace present. Robbie Findley is a decent gamble as returning to his college roots could be a more attractive option than toiling away with some inferior Euro squad. Vancouver could have paired Sanna Nyassi and Shea Salinas on the wings with Alejandro Moreno in the middle and Nathan Sturgis and John Thorrington to do the defensive and distribution work. O'Brian White, while still unproven, would do well taking service from the wingers and Moreno. Instead, after a ton of trading, Salinas and Thorrington are the only players from that group that remain. Its really tough to tell what these teams were thinking.
Rodney Wallace came with a fourth rounder and Anthony Wallace was sold for allocation money. Given a choice, I'll start Dax in the middle, Anthony on the right. They'll be better than the fourth rounder and cash.
Portland trades: Dax McCarty for Rodney Wallace and a fourth round pick Anthony Wallace for allocation money Arturo Alvarez for a second round pick Vancouver trades: Sanna Nyassi for an international roster spot Nathan Sturgis for a first round pick O'Brian White for allocation money Alan Gordon for allocation money Alejandro Moreno for an international roster spot In my thoughts about the McCarty/Wallaces dealings, I forgot the Arturo Alvarez deal. Alvarez is 25 and is a proven winger in MLS. This will be a deep draft from what I've read, but at some point, you need to go with the proven young guy over a chance at someone in the draft. Vancouver probably has big plans to bring in international players (Robbie Keane is rumored), but I never really got the point of having an extra slot for two years before returning it. Regardless, aside from Sturgis, not a whole lot of picks being moved around in there.
MLS releases details of Montreal expansion draft Impact will select 10 players during draft on November 23 Head coach Jesse Marsch and the 2012 expansion Montreal Impact have signed two players to date: defender Nelson Rivas and midfielder Hassoun Camara. On Wednesday, they learned when they'll be able to get some teammates, as MLS announced the date and details of the 2012 MLS Expansion Draft. The draft will take place on Wednesday, November 23, beginning at 2 pm ET. As in past years, the expansion draft will last 10 rounds, meaning the Impact will select 10 players. Current MLS clubs will be allowed to protect 11 players from their 2011 roster, though there are several categories of players who have special status. Generation adidas players and Homegrown Players on the team’s Off-budget Roster are automatically protected, without counting as one of the team’s 11 protected spots. Designated Players do not have to be protected unless the player’s contract includes a no-trade clause. Clubs must submit their protected roster to MLS on Monday, November 21. The Impact technical staff working hard behind closed doors 10 players to be selected this Wednesday “We have already been in contact with a lot of teams looking to discuss some potential pre-draft deals,” said the former Impact goalkeeper, also a veteran of eight seasons in MLS. “But we’ve decided to wait until the list of unprotected players was released before we got into serious negotiations. We expect many more phone calls over the next couple of days by teams either offering us a deal to select someone for them, or by looking to protect a player they were forced to make available. We’ve already got one deal done when we acquired Ryan Pore on loan from the Portland Timbers last season, getting an extra foreigner spot in that deal.” http://www.impactmontreal.com/en/ne...hnical-staff-working-hard-behind-closed-doors

Big names highlight unprotected Expansion Draft list Several stars, DPs, veterans available as Impact prepare picks Changes are afoot throughout MLS this week. Clubs released their lists of protected and unprotected players ahead of the Expansion Draft. On Wednesday, the Montreal Impact will select 10 of the available names to add to their roster. Several big names highlight the unprotected list, including Freddy Adu, Omar Bravo and Andrés Mendoza. The Peruvian finished fourth in the MLS scoring charts, but Columbus left him exposed. “You never really know how other teams view your own players,” Crew technical director Brian Bliss said. “It's always a calculated risk, and you try to mitigate it as much as you can.” http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/artic...es-highlight-unprotected-expansion-draft-list
Ching, Mapp headline Montreal expansion draft picks Impact go for big names, youth and defense; trade Riley to Chivas MONTREAL -- The Montreal Impact threw a few surprises into their picks in Wednesday's Expansion Draft, selecting several marquee names, including Houston's Brian Ching and Philadelphia's Justin Mapp. Ching has gone on the record to say he would not move to Montreal if picked. How that will play out remains to be seen, and Montreal coach Jesse Marsch said he is still open to various options. Mapp was one of two high-profile Union players on offer, the other being Freddy Adu. On Tuesday, Marsch indicated that Adu was a possibility, but in the end, chose his teammate, who does not come with as high a salary and is more established in the league on the field. Elsewhere, Marsch chose to bolster the backline, acquiring San Jose centerback Bobby Burling, Columbus left back Josh Gardner, Sporting KC left back Seth Sinovic, Vancouver right back Jeb Brovsky, and Chivas USA right back Zarek Valentin. The selection of Colorado midfielder Sanna Nyassi provides some good speed on the flanks, and Real Salt Lake's Collen Warner is an up-and-coming attacking midfielder who showed flashes in 2011. The final pick, Seattle right back James Riley, was shipped to Chivas USA immediately in exchange for forward Justin Braun and midfielder Gerson Mayen. http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2011/11/23/ching-mapp-headline-montreal-expansion-draft-picks
