For most of the past five or six years, Jamario Moon harboured two passions that couldn't co-exist practically. He was a basketball-mad nomad, charting a circuitous route to the NBA through the no-guarantee bus leagues. So his travels made it essentially impossible for him to indulge his love for dogs.

As a youngster, Moon, the 27-year-old Raptors forward from small-town Alabama, always had a K-9 sidekick or three. He owned big dogs and little dogs, everything from bulldogs to Shih Tzus. His all-time favourite, he said yesterday, was a Doberman he named Tracy that, as a small child, he'd ride around the family home like a horse. But he sold his stock of man's best friends when the uncertainty of the minor-league grind got too much. And now, there is no bark in his life.

He was saying all that yesterday in the Raptors locker room when the guy in the next stall spoke up.

"You like Shih Tzus? I've got a Shih Tzu," Anthony Parker, the Toronto swingman, said. "You can have mine. I can't stand those."

Moon chuckled at the offer, but he didn't dismiss it. The way he has played in his first month in the NBA suggests he might find the luxury of stability, not to mention the guaranteed salary, that could feasibly support a small kennel.

Moon continued to amaze observers in yesterday's 93-78 win over the Chicago Bulls, wherein his driving, skying layup over the Chicago trees immediately entrenched itself as one of the club's all-time highlight-reel plays. As the Bulls learned yesterday, opponents underestimate Moon at their peril.

Just ask Luol Deng, the Chicago forward who lowballed his on-the-fly estimates of Moon's length and leaping ability early in yesterday's game, tossing up a couple of shots in Moon's face, only to see them rejected with force. Moon, who, it can't be pointed out enough, played in the Continental Basketball Association last year, finished with six blocked shots.

lol. I know how Moon feels. I grew up with dogs and land but have been trapped in apartments in the city for the past six years.

I've got two dogs in my apartment. As long as they get out and play in the dog run or the park at least every other day, I feel like they're doing alright.
