    Shocking news about Zo!

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">East Rutherford, NJ, Nov. 24 -- New Jersey Nets center Alonzo Mourning will no longer be able to play professional basketball, effective November 24, 2003, due to an existing medical condition, Nets President/General Manager Rod Thorn announced today. </div>

    <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">STATEMENT FROM DR. GERALD APPEL
    Columbia University Medical Center
    Kidney Specialist

Alonzo Mourning has had a kidney disease due to focal glomerulosclerosis for three years. Although through treatment he experienced a partial remission of the disease and was able to return to vigorous physical activity and playing professional basketball, in recent weeks, his kidney function has rapidly deteriorated. I, in consultation with team physicians, have concluded that it is no longer medically safe for him to play basketball. Although he still feels well, the chemical imbalances in his blood make it dangerous for him to play. Alonzo will need a kidney transplant in the near future to correct his progressive renal failure, and a nationwide search is currently underway to find a prospective donor.

I aleady thought that he is recovering and can start in second part of the season..
The Nets are so screwed! They have only Jason Collins as a true center now...

I salute to 'Zo,He had a great career that was dismantled by a kidney desease,I wish him to get his new kidney and have a good life...

Wow this is really shocking to say the least.

Zo' has had a good career and it is a shame that he has to quit basketball not because he wants to but rather because he is forced to. On the bright side, at least they found out that he was not healthy enough to play before something tragic happened to him.

Best wishes to Alonzo and his family.

Horrible news to Zo and the Nets. The Nets will need to do something to replace Zo. What a big blow to the Nets.

Shocking? I don't think so at all. Zo has pushed himself too much the last few years in trying to come back when he should not have. I was worried about the guy for his life and felt that he should not be playing ball. Don't get me wrong, I am all for trying to play till the wheels fall off, but I did not feel that way in this case.

I just wish that Zo has a healthy life so thatw ay he can be there for his wife and children. It was a pleasure watching him play basketball.

And by the way, I am sure the Nets can find 7 and 3 somewhere else probably on the roster.

I also edited the thread title.

Wow. I was really shocked to come home and see the headline at yahoo. It said "Alonzo Mourning Retires" and all I thought of was his disease and Martin's comments. I feel really bad. I thought he was doing better considering he came back. All the love to Zo.<3

[IMG] too bad...prolly my all time fav center was zo.

my heart goes out to him and his fam...hope the transplant goes ok

nets arent in that much of trouble...they'll just bring a-train in off the bench like they did before. hes a stud, always plugs good minutes

how does this work for his contract? do the nets still have to pay him? how does this work for the salary cap?

One of the NBA's great stories in turning himself from an arrogant badboy to one of the most respected personalities in the game. Will truly be missed, well done 'Zo.

I can't say I didn't see this coming. Kenyon Martin should be reflecting on the comments he made to Alonzo. Remember those ones he made making fun of Zo's kidney problem?

Damn, I really wanted Zo to have a decent year. He was my favorite center, and I was happy when he returned, but now all of thats gone. The good thing is he had a great career.

Wow, Mourning was a good guy, too. And they got rid of Dikembe, they are in a hole now.

This was really bad new for the Nets. First off though, it sucks to have to see Zo go out like this. Probably not the way he thought of ending his career. But, nonetheless, best wishes to him. But, the Nets, they're doomed at the center position. All they have now is Jason Collins as a true center and Aaron Williams as an undersized one. They're quite doomed.

Jason Collins has played better than Mutombo and Mourning, and now it is time for A.Williams to play some more minutes, not all that huge of a loss.

Having that said **** Martin and Jefferson.

Goodbye Zo, Nets actually had a small chance of winning title but they wont now that Zo is gone. But he can still play even though he'z risking his life right?

No, he can't play. The doctors won't let him. It's kinda hard to play when you're not medically cleared because of a LIFE THREATENING kidney disorder.

Hopefully Kenyon Martin will give him an apology now, after mocking him and saying, "My kidney, my kidney!"
