Mutarelli Calls For Serie A Improvement

Lazio midfielder Massimo Mutarelli has urged his teammates to start showing the domestic form that catapulted them into a Champions League place last season...

Lazio's Serie A campaign has been atrocious thus far, the capital side picking up just seven points from seven games so far, with just a solitary victory to their names.

In Europe, though, they've managed 4 points from 6 in the Champions League, so perhaps there is the prospect of improvement on the domestic front, too.

Midfielder Massimo Mutarelli certainly thinks so - and has urged his teammates to fix their terrible domestic standing.

He told the media, "Serie A remains our objective.

"Playing against [Real] Madrid on the big stage gives us a special motivation, but the league remains key."

Sadly, they're not playing like it, having most recently lost out 5-1 to a resurgent AC Milan side at the San Siro.

The 29 year old former Palermo ace sighed, "We gave the Milan side too much space.

"Cristian Ledesma's absence has hurt us a lot; he's very difficult for us to replace.

"And I think that goalkeeper Fernando Muslera comes in for too much criticism. One cannot merely blame him: the defence and midfield have to shoulder some of the blame."

Livorno visit the Olimpico this weekend for an intriguing clash, the Amaranto staring relegation in the face while the pressure is on Lazio to deliver in front of a fervent home support.

"This will be difficult," said Mutarelli.

"They've just hired a new manager and they will be adjusting, but we need to stay focused."

Mutarelli previously served Atalanta and Genoa.

Mutarelli is certainly right about getting their act together, but I think even he is overlooking the issue between the pipes. Lazio cannot win the league without a top goalkeeper. With their past and their prestige they should be able to obtain a great keeper by the January transfer window. They cannot wait any longer.

Yep, right now thats the only area they need to improve. Everything is set basically, and during the first half versus milan they played damn good, until they got those goals. lol

Actually I think Lazio could use a star central defender too. However,if I had to choose between spending the budget equally on two good players, or spending the entire budget on a star central defender or star goalkeeper I'd choose the GK.
