Serena struggles against unknown Russian Serena Williams was not quite sure how she survived one of the longest matches of her career on a chilly, windy day at the Caja Magica. But after a 3-hour, 26-minute battle against Russia's Vera Dushevina, which she pulled out, 6-7, 7-6, 7-6, Serena said it was "all about looking to the future." Last week in Rome - her first tournament since winning the Australian Open - Williams lost in the semifinal from match point up. This time, she came through from match point down, which was some kind of improvement, although 72 errors should go down as a worry. Amazingly, although this was her second appearance here at the Mutua Madrilena Open, she professed not to have realized that Madrid is situated about 3,000 feet above sea level - a geographical detail that results in sending tennis balls flying through the air faster than usual. Venus shines in Madrid Fourth seed Venus Williams made an impressive start to her title campaign at the 2010 Mutua Madrilena Madrid Open with a straight sets win over German Stefanie Voegele. Seven time major champion Williams never looked in trouble and completed the 6-4, 6-2 win in 72 minutes of play. She was later joined by Czech Lucie Safarova, who took out WTA superstar Maria Sharapova 6-4, 6-3 to move ahead in the draw.

Nadal cruises into Pre-Quarters in Madrid, Youzhny ousted Clay court King Rafael Nadal continued his solid run at the 2010 Mutua Madrilena Madrid Open with a straight sets yet hard-fought win over Ukrainian qualifier Oleksandr Dolgopolov Jr. and reached the pre-quarterfinals of the ATP World Tour 1000 event. Nadal opened the match well and broke Dolgopolov Jr.'s serve in the second game to race to a 2-0 lead, which he eventually converted into the opening set lead. Federer Wins The struggling Roger Federer looked good in a straight-set victory over German Benjamin Becker in the second round of the Madrid Mutua Madrilena Masters on Tuesday. The World No. 1 and Madrid defending champion cruised to a 6-2, 7-6(4) win over Becker to advanced to a third round encounter either with countryman Stanislas Wawrinka or Leonardo Mayer.

Rafael Nadal kept his quest for a record-breaking 18th ATP World Tour Masters 1000 crown alive, as he ousted 13th-seeded American John Isner on Thursday, 7-5, 6-4. The second-seeded Mallorcan held 11 of 11 service games, passing through the 87-minute clash without facing break point. With the round of 16 victory, Nadal extended his 2010 record to 28-4, remaining on track to sweep all three clay-court Masters events this year. A tight opening set had both players hold serve with little trouble. At 5-4, Isner called for the trainer to address a right arm issue. Nadal earned his first opportunity to break at 5-5, aided by a handful of missed first serves and errors from Isner. The World No. 3 took a 6-5 edge as the American struck a forehand wide. Andy Murray beats Victor Hanescu to reach Madrid Masters quarter-finals The six men with black lettering on their shirts that spelt out the name “Victor” decided to call the match quits after five games when their man was still hitting the ball nicely. They must have known something that the rest of us were not privy to because Victor Hanescu’s challenge to Andy Murray yesterday was about to be systematically dismantled. In reaching the quarter-finals of the Mutua Madrileña Masters here, Murray has dropped nine games and used up only two hours and 21 minutes of court time. The British No 1 is in a mean mood, as his 6-2, 6-1 victory testified. When Murray failed to earn a point — even those when the Romanian world No 38 would strike a clean winner — he would berate himself or, if he was at their end of the court, let his team know how he felt. Andy Murray suffers another setback in face of Spanish inquisition Not since the heady days of Melbourne has Andy Murray played competitively on a final Saturday. The British No 1, as valiantly as he strived, was unable to quell the Spanish stampede at another clay-court event, his defeat by the irrepressible David Ferrer leaving three from the home nation to compete for the Mutua Madrileña Madrid Open title here. The only man in the path of breaking a record of Spanish success on clay this year that takes the breath away is Roger Federer, the defending champion. First, today, the world No 1 will have to find some way of drawing the spark from Ferrer, whose second defeat of Murray in consecutive tournaments was every bit as riveting as the first. Murray began his quarter-final when he was 22 and ended it at 23. Of course, he would have loved the present of a place in his first semi-final since the Australian Open and there were times when it looked as if he might conjure a real shock. But on each occasion such a prospect arose, Ferrer was there, feet in the right place, execution explicit and energy unquenched. Fantastic Venus outclasses Peer, cruises into the Final in Madrid True to her class, the seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams humbled Sahar Peer of Israel in straight sets 6-3 6-0, by firing 17 winners and stormed into the final of the 2010 Mutua Madrilena Madrid Open, a WTA Premier event, being played in the Spanish Capital. Both the players traded breaks in the early games of the first set, but Venus stuck to her game plan well and earned the critical break in the eighth game of the second set. She held on to her serve in the next game and wrapped up the first set with 6-3. Venus squandered away many opportunities as she could have closed the first set early, but she could not, as Peer was up to the task. Rafael Nadal wins Rafael Nadal won a record-breaking 18th ATP World Tour Masters 1000 shield at the Mutua Madrileña Madrid Open Sunday evening. The Mallorcan took out World No. 1 Roger Federer in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6(5). Rafael Nadal extended his series edge to 14-7 over familiar rival Roger Federer on Sunday, downing the World No. 1 in two hours and 10 minutes. The 23-year-old, who improved his 2010 record to 31-4, became the first player to sweep all three clay-court Masters events. Nadal snagged his 28th clay-court title, raising his career tally to 39. The Mallorcan hoisted his third crown of the season, which includes previous successes in Monte-Carlo and Rome. Nadal struck first, taking a 2-1 edge as Federer hit a backhand into the net. Federer regrouped to draw level at 2-2, aided by a handful of unforced errors from Nadal. The Mallorcan collected triple break point at 3-3, but did not convert. Federer saved a fourth breaker, then gifted a backhand error on the fifth. Four break points came at 4-5 for the World No. 1, who donated unforced errors on all of them. Rezai eclipses Venus for Madrid Open title Unseeded Frenchwoman Aravane Rezai today registered the biggest win of her singles career when she toppled fourth seed and multiple Grand slam champion Venus Williams to claim the 2010 Mutua Madrilena Madrid Open Rezai opened the match on a high note and broke Williams serve twice to seal the opening set by 6 games to 2. The second set saw a momentary shift in momentum when Williams raced to a 5-2 lead and seemed all set to push the match into a deciding third set.
