It is week 2 of the 2001 season....Bill Belicheck is in his 2nd year with the NE Patriots after failing in Cleveland....BBs record in NE at this time is 6-11....hes starting to feel the pressure of a job and career that is in disarray....he fears he will be fired if he doesnt turn the team around quickly....his starting QB is Drew Bledsoe....Bledsoe is knocked out of the week 2 game agasint the Jets and the Patriots go on to lose....Tom Brady is the backup and starts the next week agasint Miami.....that is another loss....BB is facing a 6-13 record straight in the face and nows hes without his franchise QB....in desperation, he decides that he can gain an edge if he cheats....so he does....and he wins! and no one notices, so he just keeps doing it all the way to the Super Bowl title....in the offseason, he decides to stop doing this because he doesnt want to lose his coaching career....the result is an average Patriots team that misses the playoffs....thats a blow to his fragile ego and he decides that he will do whatever it takes to win in the future....so they start cheating again and win 2 more titles....teams suspect it for a long time, but cant say it because it will sound like sour grapes from a sour loser....until eventually, they do get caught....Patriots fans go into lockdown defense mode and starting spinning like a top....

That doesn't make much sense, he decides to stop cheating all of a sudden?

The theory needs some work but parts could be true. Let's see people continue to talk like this if the Pats continue to win games.

Why doesn't it make sense? He won his super bowl, why run the risk of getting caught after winning the Super Bowl? His next season was a dud so he resorted back to cheating...sounds very plausible.

He starts, stops and then starts again?

If he cheated, he probably still cheated in that 2002 season, except that the team had an off year most likely. He obviously didn't care about getting caught (the Jets game was against a former assistant that knows things).

If he needed to cheat to win the Superbowl, he would obviously know he wouldn't win the Sb again in 2002 without cheating.

I will tell you why it makes some sense....Cheating is a high risk/high reward activity....why do rational people engage in high risk/high reward behavior? Insecurity....when you feel insecure about things, you tend to take more chances....its similar to an animal backed into a corner....what did BB have to be insecure about? #1, his livelyhood and legacy were in jeopardy, because he was very unlikely to be hired by a team as a Head Coach again if he was fired....#2, and this might be the real source, he was on the outs with his mentor, Bill Parcells, and he was trying to prove something to himself....before 2001, Belicheck never had sustained successes without Parcells....so, based on this, he engages in a high risk/high reward behavior and it pays off big time....after hes won a Super Bowl, his job and legacy are secure....hes seperated himself from the Parcells umbrella....hes now thinking more rationally because his insecurities are gone so he deems the behavior as too risky....he stops, but in the back of his mind, he knows he didnt get caught....they are in contention for most of the 2002 season, but they fall a bit short....he knows in the past hes had some success cheating and he beat the system so he decides to start again....I find it very plausible

Belichick's team wasn't that talented in 2001 (they needed a tuck rule to move on), that probably accounts for a lot of things. And how exactly does Belichick pull off this cheating in the Superbowl, with all the extra security and such? So many questions to answer and people are still so sure about their theories.

That theory makes it sould like * ick *aban took the honorable way out.

The way * ick *aban left S Fla w/ his tail between his legs in a big Crimson red semi makes me wonder. He was tight w/ BB.

Further, how long before the pats start drafting alot of Bama players like the did w/ former Bayou Bengals?hmmmmm?

Maybe Saban left because he knew what BB was doing, was unwilling to do it, but was also unwilling to rat....
