Hmmm.... here are some songs that I consider among the greatest ever.

    Richard Thompson - Beeswing

James Carr - Dark End Of The Street

    Nirvana - Polly

Charlie Rich - Lord I Feel Like Going Home

I only know the Nirvana song. Will listen to others in a bit.

My other nominees would be something like

    Simple Man by Lynyrd Skynryd
    Hotel California by The Eagles
    Plush by Stone Temple Pilots
    Big River by Johnny Cash
    Use Me by Bill Withers

I'm sure there are more I am missing.

My favorite songwriter is Richard Thompson. He's the father of English folk rock and one of the greatest guitarists in history. I'd recommend the albums, Pour Down Like Silver, Shoot Out The Lights and Front Parlor Ballads. His songs are funny, dark and seldom end happily.

I will check it out. Even with Slacker when I find something I like I hadn't heard of, related artists bring me back to stuff I know. Which reminds me of a better song than any I mentioned, just haven't heard a decent sound quality version. Steppenwolf, It's Never Too Late.

Not exactly sure why, but I love the line from Guitar Town by Steve Earle....."I gotta keep rockin' while I still can, I got a two pack habit and a motel tan". Just struck me as clever when I first heard it....

Also forgot to throw "Mama Tried" by Merle Haggard on my list.
