Napoli receive punishment for violence during the match with Roma

The sports judge has punished Napoli for the violence between Roma and Azzurri fans which broke out on the first day of Serie A matches

Roma and Napoli played to a 1-1 draw at the Stadio Olimpico on the first Serie A match day, but the game was marred by violence and dangerous conduct by the Napoli fans in particular.

One of the Partenopei supporters was arrested after the match for possession of a knife. During the game in Rome, police found and seized several weapons. Knives, fireworks, flares, and even a hammer were among other dangerous items were taken by police from the nearby Napoli supporters area.

The sports judge has now given the club a 10.000 € fine and has disallowed the use of the A and B stands at the San Paolo Stadium until the 31 of October, keeping out the Napoli fans for their club's home matches over the next two months.

It will be interesting to see Napoli coach Edy Reja's reaction to the punishment, considering that the coach said recently, “If they close San Paolo I'm going home; Napoli can't pay for the faults of a group of delinquents and criminals.”

Napoli may have lost more then just the fans' participation at the stadium, then, as the coach may decide to leave as well.

Supporter violence in the Italian game has been rife over the past three seasons, further damaging the reputation of Italian football and destroying the lives of those involved in the unfortunate incidents. Punishments must be used to weed out these incidents of violence and fan trouble.
