<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">In hopes of helping the U.S. return to top of Olympic basketball, Phoenix Suns chairman and CEO Jerry Colangelo is expected to be announced today as the managing director of USA Basketball men's senior national team, according to a source. Colangelo's duties will include selecting players and coaches for the team as well as making decisions on training. The position will not take Colangelo away from his current duties. USA Basketball executive director Jim Tooley declined comment on Colangelo but did say, "We have an announcement which will be a major step toward aiding our men's senior program."</div> Source I agree with all the changes he wants to bring to the team.

I read the article but didn't see anything about his plans. What's up with that? Anyways, I'd like to see more players (not every player) with playoff experience added that knows what it takes to win. These flashy players that sell jerseys and have nice stats won't get the job done. We definetly need to add a coach that preaches defense but has a system that is easy to adapt and produces quick results. This coach must also adapt to the team he has and not make the team adapt to him.
There's more info here. <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">``It's going to be drastically different,'' Colangelo said Wednesday at a news conference, ``and I say that because you know stars do not necessarily make a great team.'' </div> I think Colangelo is a good choice because he's a good basketball person with a nice track record. I'm not sure if he'll attract players alone, but the simple fact that they've got a plan might at least show players that the US is serious about this. The next step is trying to get the players to be patriotic, I suppose. As far as his plans, he didn't name specific players but he did note that "character" was important and so was a two-year committment. A good coach and steady practices would help a ton. Just as Colangelo seems to note, I'd like to see some of the top defenders get the call as well as the top shooters, instead of simply the "franchise" big name players. I'm not so sure about adding college players to the ranks though with NBA players.
Am I in the minority when I say that I dont think any changes would need to be made if we could just get USA's A name top players to play.If it would have been the same players from the 03 qualifier/whatever games it would have been straight domination. The only changes that I think need to be made are the attitudes of our TOP players.
Coach K? <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">"There has been speculation that Jerry Colangelo could look at Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski as the next coach of the USA Basketball senior national team. There might be a problem with that. Krzyzewski has a job. Colangelo's first decision might not have to be who to select, but what the coach he picks must do. He might be best served to pick a coach who can work more than just in his spare time, someone to lead the scouting through the year and a selection process more involved than glancing at the NBA All-Star teams." <div class="quote_poster">Quoting JWohl:</div><div class="quote_post">source interesting...... Coach K as the Olympic coach? ..... I want a coach for our country whose only job over the next two years will be to focus on our team. Besides, how do you think most of today's NBA stars would react to a harsh disciplinarian like Bobby Knight? Does anyone think that Shane Battier would be a good fit for this new team USA? He is the cliche of a guy that does all the little things for the team. It seems like Colangelo wants character guys who are hard workers, and you can't get a guy who fits that definition better than Shane Battier. "Seems like everything comes together when you work hard" - Shane Battier
