INDIANAPOLIS — Auburn quarterback Cam Newton is eligible to play in the SEC title game, even though the NCAA says his father broke rules by shopping his son to another school. The NCAA released its finding in a statement on Wednesday. The college sports governing body had concluded on Monday that a violation of Newton’s amateur status had occurred. Auburn declared Newton ineligible on Tuesday and requested his eligibility be reinstated. Newton has now been cleared to compete without conditions. Auburn, No. 2 in the AP poll and No. 1 in the Bowl Championship Series rankings, plays South Carolina in the Southeastern Conference championship game on Saturday. With a victory, the Tigers will earn a spot in the BCS national title game, where they will play Oregon if the Ducks beat Oregon State in the Civil War Saturday. Newton also is considered the front-runner for the Heisman Trophy. -- The Associated Press
Newton is eligible at this point. The NCAA never said he was not eligible; that was Auburn's decision. Seems like a semantic game that really does nothing to clear up the situation.
Cool. This sets a great precedent for future athletes. Just have your dad do all your dirty deeds and you won't get in trouble. I hope the IRS goes after them.
I'm glad he's playing because I want to see a UO vs Auburn national championship game... but he should be suspended for at least one game. You'd have to be a fool to believe Cam didnt know his Dad was asking for $$$$. A USC player was suspended for one game for taking a short ride in a golf cart with a potential agent. This sets a very bad precident. Play dumb and you wont get in trouble?
