Re: Nellie's Have a whale of a time http://www.mercurynews.com/warriors/ci_6129565What you already knew: It has been 29 days since the Warriors' season ended with a Game 5 loss to Utah. Before leaving for his Maui home, Don Nelson set a self-imposed July 1 deadline to decide whether or not to coach the team again next season. What you didn't know: Nellie keeps a diary.Sunday, May 20: Arrived home in Maui today. The flight was perfect, except for the part where Lucky made a no-no in business class. Landing was perfect. Weather here is perfect. First thing I did was put my feet up in front of my favorite whale-watching picture window. I think I'm finally starting to decompress, as I fell asleep halfway through my glass of Scotch and three-quarters of the way through my cigar. (Note to self: pick up some salve at the store for the nasty burn on my chest.)Monday, May 21: Was going through all the newspapers we found stacked on the driveway, and I saw where Dirk Nowitzki was named MVP last week. I still feel bad about what we did to him in the playoffs. It was a lesson I picked up from Red Auerbach: Never teach your best player all your tricks; you may have to beat him in a playoff series some day. Wonder if Baron Davis has any clue what he'd be in for. Heh, heh, heh.Tuesday, May 22: Hadn't planned to watch the NBA draft lottery tonight, but "Matlock" was a rerun. Not good news for the Warriors, with Portland and Seattle moving up into the first and second spots. No change for us, of course. We're still stuck with No. 18. The one time I --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Advertisement--------------------------------------------------------------------------------had that pick, at Milwaukee, I took Randy Breuer -- 7-foot-3, averaged 4.4 rebounds for his career. The last time the Warriors picked 18th, back in 1977, they took Wesley Cox with Norm Nixon still on the board. Me and my coaching staff, we laughed so hard over that one we had Old Milwaukee shooting out our noses.Saturday, May 26: Had my first hula dancing lesson this afternoon. My wife Joy's idea. I had trouble at first because I'm still hurting from when my players included me in the celebration circle after our last win over Dallas. But it turned out OK. That grass skirt really breathes, and by the end I was wondering how it would look with a fish tie.Tuesday, May 29: Spoke with Mully on the phone today. He said they've had a couple humpback whales swimming around San Francisco Bay. I told him, heck, if you want me back that bad, just throw me another couple million.Wednesday, May 30: Watched San Antonio eliminate Utah tonight. My first thought was, I wish we could have played the Spurs and my old friend Gregg Popovich. He would have popped a vein when he saw me run Kelenna Azubuike out there to defend Tim Duncan. My second thought was, the first four championships I won with the Celtics, we were done no later than May 12. The seasons have gotten too doggone long. So there's another couple million Mully will have to throw me to come back.Thursday, May 31: I wasn't going to watch the Cleveland-Detroit game, but "Murder, She Wrote" was a rerun. Glad I caught the game. Cleveland won in double-OT. LeBron James scored 48 points, including the Cavaliers' final 25 of the game. Man, if I had a LeBron on my team, I'd never even have to consider playing Sarunas Jasikevicius again.Friday, June 1: Stepped on the scale today for the first time since getting home. I was shocked to see I'd gained a couple pounds. Then I saw Lucky sitting between my feet. Bad dog!Tuesday, June 5: Played poker with Willie Nelson last night. Took him to the cleaners. Won a huge hand, aces over queens against his king-high straight. I was going to tell him he didn't have to honor our side bet, but then I decided I really did want to see what he looked like with a clean shave. Bad move on my part.Sunday, June 10: Had trouble falling asleep again last night. Turned on Game 2 of the NBA Finals. That worked better than warm milk. (Note to self: wash bedding to remove smell of warm milk.)Tuesday, June 12: I wasn't going to watch "I Love the '90s" this afternoon, but "The Golden Girls" was a rerun. When they showed an MC Hammer video, Lucky sat pretty in front of the TV. I think he misses Oakland. I think I do, too. Wonder what it'd take to get those two humpbacks to swim where I could see them from my penthouse.
