Gary Neville is still some way off returning to the Manchester United first eleven as his reserve team comeback has been delayed...

Manchester United and England stalwart Gary Neville has failed to make the reserve team squad to face Liverpool.

The 32 year old right-back was expected to line up tonight as his recuperation continues, but his calf and thigh problems persist, meaning that his seven month absence from football will continue.

Neville, the club captain, picked up an ankle injury on March 17, missing United's successful run-in, and has endured a series of minor injuries that have hampered his recovery.

With tonight's reserve fixture passing him by, it may not be until November 1st that he gets another chance to take to the pitch, the Red Devils meeting Stockport County in the Manchester Senior Cup.

Neville, capped 85 times for England, made his league and European debuts for United back in 1992. The Old Trafford side remain his only senior club.

According to manutd.com, Brian McClair's second string will line up as follows against the Reds:

Zieler; Gray, R Eckersley, Chester, A Eckersley; Lee, Cleverley, Hewson, Barnes; Dong, Fagan.
(Subs from: S Evans, Woods, C Evans, Drinkwater, Welbeck.)
