The New Jersey Devils have submitted to the league for approval a new contract with star free agent Ilya Kovalchuk, NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly confirmed to ESPN on Friday.

According to Daly, the league has five days to review the contract.

Daly said there will be no decision on the deal Saturday.

Although no specific details of the deal are known at this time, a source says it's a 15-year contract worth approximately $100 million.

I am pretty sure the NJ Devils were talking with the NHL while working on this contract so no more issues occur. I also heard that if this falls through, Kovy will look closer at the KHL in Russia.

While the Ilya Kovalchuk saga is not over yet, it appears as though the end may well be near.

NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly confirmed that the New Jersey Devils have submitted a new Kovalchuk deal to the league and that the NHL now has five days to review the contract.

Earlier in the day several sources reported that the League had in fact approved the framework of the latest contract proposal, however the NHL told TSN that as of 3 pm et, no deal had been approved.

Terms of the potential contract have yet to be released but it is believed to be a 15-year deal worth approximately $100 million, which in an amusing twist would make the cap hit $6.66 million a season. It is also believed that the Devils have addressed the league's objections to the length of the contract and the enormous salary drop-off over the final years of the contract.

Earlier in the day it was reported that Kovalchuk's Russian agent Yuri Nikolaev had set a 48-hour deadline for the NHL to approve his clients contract, otherwise Kovalchuk would likely sign a deal in the KHL where he would remain for at least one full season.

Should the announcement be made official it will end a saga that has been drawn out all summer long after the league originally rejected the 17-year, $102 million contract that Kovalchuk and the Devils agreed upon. The Devils reportedly submitted a second 15-year proposal on Monday that was also rejected by the league.

The Ilya Kovalchuk contract situation expected to reach a conclusion by 5 p.m. ET on Wednesday will instead continue until 5 p.m. ET Friday. The National Hockey League and the National Hockey League Players' Association announced it was mutually agreed to extend the deadline by which the League must reach a decision on the latest contract Kovalchuk signed with the New Jersey Devils.

The contract, which reportedly calls for Kovalchuk to make $100 million over 15 years, was submitted to the NHL last Friday and the League originally had five days to review the contract before deciding if it was acceptable or not.

Devils GM Lou Lamoriello issued this statement late Wednesday afternoon: "We have today been advised that the NHL and NHLPA have agreed to extend until Friday the decision on whether to approve or reject the latest contract between Ilya Kovalchuk and the New Jersey Devils.

"We remain confident that the terms of this contract comply, in every respect, with the CBA and meet both the NHL's concerns and the principles of Arbitrator Bloch's decision. We remain optimistic that this extension will result in an approval of the contract and that Ilya Kovalchuk will remain a valuable member of the Devils for the balance of his career.

"We will have no further comment until the decision is rendered."

Kovalchuk this summer has already had a 17-year, $102 million contract rejected by the NHL for circumvention of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. The League's decision was upheld by a system arbitrator, Richard Bloch.
