<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Pete Newell is confident Mike Montgomery can succeed in the NBA. Still, the basketball Hall of Famer warned that the transition from the college game is daunting for anyone. "Mike will do a lot of studying," Newell said. "He's got a lot of work ahead of him." Newell has enjoyed success at both levels. He won the 1949 NIT at USF and the '59 NCAA Tournament at Cal. He served as a general manager in the NBA, for the then-San Diego Rockets and the Los Angeles Lakers. He's been a consultant for several other NBA teams, including the Warriors. He is still closely attuned to today's game, primarily through his acclaimed Big Man's Camp. He said Montgomery will quickly have to adjust his coaching tactics as he moves from Stanford to the Warriors. "The game is different and that's what you have to expect," he said. </div> http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?...SPGJO6Q4I41.DTL ============================== On a side note, Pete Newell's son, Pete Newell Jr. is the coach at Santa Cruz High School and I played against him in basketball for 4 years in highschool. I talked to Pete Newell on many occassions and it was an honor. Nothing but nice things to say.
Well, montgomery is a great coach for college, but we're yet to see how great of an NBA coach there is You never know, maybe he will be good for the warriors, maybe he could tone down some of the egos that they have. I'm really depressed about stanford though, theyre going to be hurting without monty

Maybe he can prove he's an allstar by repeating his performance from last year. I think he might go for the minimum in the east though if he really can't stand Oakland anymore.
I guess you could say it was sort of an afterthough, because im used to seeing the warriors as an underachieving team with lots of talent j rich and damp are SORT OF egos...but other than that you got guys who just want to win... damn, i miss arenas though, i loved studying his way of playing, helped my game quite a bit! and yeah, also, another thing is that with montgomery leaving who will be the replacement? and without montgomery, stanford will really not be the same kind of team!
Dampier is a guy that has an ego but he will most likely not be back. I don't see j-rich as having much of an ego. The guy comes out and works his ass off day in and day out and you rarely hear him complaining.
Jrich is pretty humble actually. He knows he's still learning the game and is thankful for having the opportunity to be a team leader and go to guy in Oakland. He still struggles through a lot of adversity by the fans and the rest of the league. Most other fans and commentators think he's nothing more than a dunker. But he's improved on quite a bit on his defensive effort, court awareness, ballhandling, jumping ability, getting to the free throw line, his footwork, and midrange shot. He bit this year on his 3 point shooting even though he tied a franchise record for most consecutive 3 pointers (7). He also fell in free throw shooting percentage.
