Newsome Upbeat About Andre Smith

Baltimore Ravens General Manager Ozzie Newsome expressed optimism that Alabama offensive tackle Andre Smith will rebound from a series of poor decisions and ultimately succeed in the NFL, per the Mobile Press-Register.

Smith left the NFL Scouting Combine early without informing NFL and combine officials and was visibly overweight at his Pro Day workout. He was also suspended from the Crimson Tide’s bowl game due to a violation of team rules.

Newsome, a Hall of Fame tight end who played for Bear Bryant at Alabama, is convinced that Smith will be fine.

“I don’t think that’s a bad reflection on Andre,” Newsome said during a high school coaches clinic on the Alabama campus. ”He made a bad decision leaving the combine. Can you recover from a bad decision? Yes, because at the end of the day, we’ve got to put the tape on. And when you put the tape on, you see Andre Smith.”

At Alabama coach Nick Saban’s invitation, Newsome also took in a practice session.

“Based on what Nick was telling me earlier, they’re not looking very good,” Newsome quipped. ”But that’s coming from Nick.”
