Nfl network still working to expand its reach

The NFL’s in-house television network, which celebrated its fifth birthday in November 2008, is still working to get into as many homes as possible.

According to John Ourand of SportsBusiness Journal, NFL Network possibly could disappear from two million Comcast homes once the league’s deal with the cable giant expires in April. The NFL wants to move the channel from a digital sports tier to the basic service package, which would instantly place NFLN into several million more homes.

Talks late last month in Philadelphia (where sighting of Cowboys owner Jerry Jones prompted all sorts of free-agent and trade speculation) didn’t result in much progress, per Ourand.

Ourand writes that unnamed Comcast insiders expect that a deal won’t be reached, and that Comcast will end up dropping NFLN.

Meanwhile, the league is talking to FOX about a joint venture that would allow NFLN to be introduced into more homes. The NFL previously engaged in such discussions with ESPN.

Great idea, they're a lock for ratings with their pseudo-monopoly on Thursday/etc. night games.
