NFL Teams Will Get A Bargain, If Vick Is Ever Reinstated

Buried in an item from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution regarding Mike Vick’s alleged raiding of pension funds to pay his debts is a juicy little nugget that any NFL team potentially interested in Vick needs to keep in mind.

Under the terms of Vick’s proposed bankruptcy plan, Vick will keep the first $750,000 of his annual NFL salary. The rest will go to his creditors.

So apart from agent Joel Segal’s increased fee, there’s really no reason for Vick to try to get more than $750,000 per year. Unless he believes he has a chance of making enough to pay off all his debts, and thus to eventually keep 100 percent of his pay, Vick will have no incentive to push for anything substantially more than $750,000.

As a practical matter, the fact that Vick won’t keep any more than $750,000 per year possibly means that no team will offer him more than that.

Of course, none of this is relevant until Vick finds a team that wants him. And that isn’t relevant until he is reinstated.

We think he’s looking at a one-year suspension, at a minimum. Unless Commissioner Roger Goodell concludes that Vick can be trusted not to besmirch the shield again, Vick might never return to the NFL.
