Nihat Facing Six Week Lay-Off

Villarreal have been billed as potential title contenders this year and their credentials are going to be severely tested over the next month or so as they are hit with the news today that striker Nihat Kahveci will be out for over a month.

The Turkish player had to be taken off the pitch against Sporting Gijón last weekend and it has been confirmed today that he has injured his right leg and will face a long lay off.

The good news is that the injury is not the same one which he picked up pre-season but the worrying news is that as the team doctor spoke today he didn't rule out surgery, a process that would extend the lay-off, if he didn't recover properly.

"Given the complexity of the zone and the wound, if the recovery is not as desired then we wouldn't rule out other therapeutic alternatives," said Villarreal chief doctor Juan Albors, "Other alternatives could obviously include surgery but for now we are going to monitor his recovery."

The news will be a blow to manager Manuel Pellegrini who has seen his side start the season well but could now be in trouble if another striker picks up an injury as his squad looks relatively thin up front.
