<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Dominique Wilkins was informed Thursday that he will not enter the Basketball Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility, the former Hawks superstar told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

"I was shocked," said Wilkins, the ninth-leading scorer in NBA history. "I think everybody will be when they hear that announce- ment."

The announcement of this year's inductees won't come until Monday, but Wilkins said he received word from a Hall of Fame official Thursday afternoon that he came up short in the voting.

"I got a call that I wasn't going in this year but that I'm eligible again next year," Wilkins said. "I'm disappointed about it, but I'm confident that I will be going in in the very near future. My career speaks for itself."

Wilkins' career seemingly brimmed with Hall of Fame-type credentials: 26,668 total points, 24.8 points per game, nine All-Star Game selections. The Hawks had considered him all but a shoo-in.

"The news is disappointing this year," Hawks part-owner Michael Gearon Jr., a longtime fan and friend of Wilkins', said Thursday night. "Dominique is a very special person, and he was a great basketball player.

"Hopefully the Hall will recognize Dominique's enormous accomplishments next year," Gearon said, "and hopefully he'll have an opportunity then to be in the Hall with the other great players." </div> Source

Wow, I'm really surprised. In my opinion it's obvious Wilkins is a hall of famer but maybe this just wasn't his year to be selected. I'm positive it'll happen in the future though.

This is rather shocking. I thought he was a sure-shot first balloter...

Yeah, once again 'Nique gets overlooked by his NBA peers. Not only did he not get a very deserving first bid into the NBA HOF, but he's not even on the top 50 player list for the NBA. He was one of the greatest scorers the league has ever seen. Plus he made the All Star game 9 times, when being an All Star actually meant something.

Very surprising, he's definately hall of fame material. Still he should be there next year.

    What a rob [IMG]
Dominique is one of the greatest players of all time.
He was a key component to the basketball revolution that lives on today.
    Damn shame.

    Playoff PPG 25.4

<font color="Red">Reggie Miller </font> just reached 25,000 points. If Dominique is not a first ballot Hall of Famer why should Reggie?

This is not anything against Reggie Miller, but few would argue that he will not be a first ballor Hall of Famer. Neither one of them won a championship, so that's no excuse.

Shame on you Hall of Fame voters [IMG]

    wrong

This is just wrong. If nique had won a championship there would be no question to his credentials. Championships are overrated when it comes to judging a player. Is it his fault that he had nothing around him but was loyal and stayed with the hawks? He should be praised for his loyalty not hurt by it. By the time he left the hawks he was but a shell of his former self.

he played well in San Antonio and over seas. He's a top 50 player all-time, he's just not liked by the powers that be i guess.

If this was the NBA Hall of Fame, obviously he would have easily gotten in the first year. But the BHOF is heavily biased towards college coaches, interational players, and female players. Did Drazen Petrovic distinguish himself more than Dominique Wilkins? No doubt Kukoc and Divac will get in as soon as they're eligible. Were they greater or more popular basketball players than Dominique?

There's only been 9 NBA players selected in the last 8 years! They clearly don't view NBA basketball as the preeminent form, though most of us probably do.

I was furious when i heard this. Probably never getting his due, the most underrated player of all time. this guy got robbed not being in the 50 greatest list, not to mention he was one of the greatest scorers of all time. I guess that's the price for being a hawk.[IMG]
