"The Pistons deserved a break Tuesday at the NBA's annual franchise pity party.

    They didn't get one.

If anything, they got a reminder of prior bad luck.

It could be that a seemingly innocuous lost coin flip with Philadelphia last month following the regular season cost the Pistons the opportunity of landing the second overall selection in next month's draft. The Pistons and 76ers finished with identical regular-season records.

It didn't stun anyone when the draft lottery awarded the Pistons the seventh overall pick, considering they were slotted with the league's seventh-worst record. But the fifth- and sixth-worst teams just ahead of them, Washington and the 76ers, won the first two picks. They'll get what's generally considered the two can't-miss prospects -- Kentucky point guard John Wall and Ohio State combo guard Evan Turner.

The Pistons can only hope that whoever they grab at No. 7 becomes the impact player they so desperately need. If not, history will re-evaluate the wisdom of a final-week surge of relatively meaningless victories that cost them precious draft positioning."
