Hey guys. Just found out I got in. I wanted to do this but I'm scared. I was kinda hoping I wouldn't get in. Has anyone here ever run a marathon before? Advice?

What's the longest you ever ran? I walked a half marathon, but that's about it. I was fucking tired as fuck after that.

Yeah, you're pretty much fucked. You'll have to basically start running everyday building up from something small to longer and longer distances. When is it?

Congrats Eric, that will be an amazing event to part of. Tough as hell, and you better start preparing today, but the sense of accomplishment and camaraderie with your fellow racers will make this one life experience you'll cherish forever. Good luck, and keep us up to date on your training and what happens in the actual race.

    MURRICA!!!!!

Signing up for stuff that you just feel like doing for giggles seems a bit off. Is there charity involved here?

Just wanna know why someone who doesn't train for it wants to do it. I ride bikes but I don't train for an Ironman competition. I drove by their route last year and thought it would be awesome to do it, but I wouldn't take a spot if others were actually able to do it.

How do you accomplish stuff? You say, I'm going to do it, then follow through.

This is a good method for building up distance:

If you haven't run lately, walk 4:30 then run :30, do that 30 minutes for a few days.

Advance to walk 4:00 run 1:00 maybe add some total time, etc.

You get the picture. You're adding run time as you subtract walk time. It's a great way to build up stamina, and eventually you can run an hour pretty easily.

Sadly, at least for me, no matter how much I run I always have to get past "the wall" in the first few minutes to get to endorphin cruise control.

A better way to accomplish things is to find out what they require before signing on. A more likely result of this level of commitment is someone quitting before they get started.

He'll never finish if he even goes through with it at all.

I wouldn't bet against KS, he seems like the type of person who could do it.

He has enough free time. Now if he does it I'll take some credit for double Sly daring him.

    I win either way.

Alright, how about a friendly wager? A bourbon or beer at a pub? There is a chance I'll be moving soon, if so I'll substitute $25 for the drink if I'm unavailable to pay up in person. I bet KS will finish the NY marathon even if he has to do it crawling to the finish line.

That wager isnt fair, I talked to him on the phone 7 years ago while I was shit talking with PapaG. I posted my phone number and Eric called me. I told him PapaG was a f#@..hadn't really thought the slur through at the time. Doubt if Eric likes me much. He would probably want me to lose.

Even still, I will bet 25 bucks....easy money.

No advice here. I don't think running was in the plan when I got my equipment issue. Or not much farther than you can chuck a rock.

Ok bodyman5000, $25 bucks. No, I'm not going to Vegas, I thought you lived in PDX. I'm hopefully moving to Walla Walla if certain things work out, which it looks like they are. As far as Eric is concerned, I hope you apologized privately to him, if so, I'll bet you don't register to him much anymore. And besides, it's a small fun bet, nothing to tilt the world.

I'm hopefully going back to school in enology and viticulture (winemaking and vineyard management and other wine-related gigs). I'd like to change fields and hopefully start my own winery in the future.
