Although I have always felt Obama would win, Romney was surging in the polls as he looked more "presidential" in the debates (as did Ryan over Biden). But Obama has been given the opportunity to act presidential after Sandy and did a good political job of it and now is surging in the late polls. To be sure, a very fortuitous event for Obama.
Romney's surge was already waning even before Sandy hit, but I would say that the situation gave Obama a slight bump.
You are aware that there are still millions of people without food and/or power, and that standing for a photo op actually is starting to damage Obama now that the shortcoming of FEMA and the government are yet again starting to be exposed.
That's not the point. The point is that Obama, as President, toured the area and had Christie in tow (appropriately) and said and did all the things he should do in 'showing the flag' after a disaster of this proportion. He did a good job of it. All I'm pointing out is that had Sandy not come along he'd still be fighting for his political life. Now, I think this cements his reelection 100%.
The reality is that the situation is still a massive disaster. Flying around on an airplane and wearing a flight jacket to a campaign rally in Ohio today seems forced. It's a tough issue for any campaigning President. I just don't think it has any effect on the election, one way or the other.
It's remarkable what happens when he actually acts like a president, isn't it? It's a reminder to many that there have been precious few moments like that in the past four years. That being said, I don't think it's much help.
I agree with this. Seems around the country Obama is getting an approval for the way he is handling this disaster. Granted, pretty easy for the president, knowing there is an election coming up, to make sure he acts presidential in this sitatuation. It is the endorsement from Mayor Bloomberg and praise from Governor Christie with the nation's eyes on those two states that I think will have an impact on this election. You are right, fortunate timing for Obama . . . more focus on this than anything else right before the election. Wow. Romeny needs to spin this into how much more he is needed to right the economy after this disaster.
So I have Sandy to thank for another 4 years of the deficit spiraling out of control, and health care costs crippling Ameria
