I enjoy a good Christmas movie and have seen all the standard ones over and over (Elf, Christmas Vacation, Home Alone, Wonderful Life etc) and have been trying to branch out a little this season. Was bored at home this past weekend with a sick wife and stumbled on Fatman, where Santa is played by Mel Gibson and Walton Goggins is an assassin hired to kill him. I'm not going to tell you it was a good movie but pretty enjoyable 90ish minutes with a different take on the Christmas motif. So my question is, what are some of your favorite non-traditional Christmas movies?
Grumpy Cat's Worst Christmas Ever. A Christmas Movie Christmas. Both are very self-aware about exploiting Christmas Movie tropes and mocking their existence. I enjoy movies that don't take themselves seriously.
Trading places with Eddie Murphy and Dan Akroyd.....Akroyd drunk in the Santa Suit pocketing lunchmeat is hilarious.
Watched A Christmas Movie Christmas to kick off the season, it was a worthy sequel but doubt I'll revisit it again. Interesting watching it now with parents that are getting older and the story with the Old Man in it.
That's always been a blindspot in my movie resume but might need to fix that ... looks like it's not on any of the streamers but sounds like it's worth the $4 to rent
Remember the Night (1940) and The Bishop's Wife (1947) - not so much off beat, but less-seen classics. If you want offbeat, you can't offbeat Rare Exports (2010):
I thought it was the funniest thing ever when I was a kid. It was my introduction to Eddie Murphy, not being exposed to SNL in England.
