Quote:

Heat center Shaquille O'Neal once again helped nab a suspect -- and this time he was the alleged victim. O'Neal, a reserve officer with the Miami Beach Police Department, followed a vehicle that allegedly crashed into his Cadillac Escalade and left the scene early Sunday, team spokesman Tim Donovan said Sunday. Donovan said the incident happened after O'Neal and Jerome Crawford, a team security official, returned home from the Heat's game at Chicago on Saturday night. Crawford and O'Neal were unloading the car at Crawford's home in Coconut Grove, but weren't in it during the alleged incident, Donovan said. O'Neal and Crawford followed the vehicle for about five minutes while O'Neal called police, Donovan said, adding that the pursuit wasn't at high speed and that police pulled over the alleged hit-and-run driver. No further information was available from police Sunday. This incident was at least the second time O'Neal has helped police apprehend a suspect. In September 2005 he followed and led police to a suspect who allegedly had thrown a bottle at two men walking on Miami Beach while shouting anti-gay slurs. O'Neal, through the team, said Sunday night that he followed proper police protocol during the chase, including pursuing at a safe distance and speed. He contacted police officers along the way, he said. O'Neal was sworn in as a reserve officer in 2005. He has long said he intends to pursue a career in law enforcement when he retires from basketball.
Source
haha, saw this on nba.com. gotta love shaq's effort to keep our world a better place. way to go big guy.
Are you serious? The only reason this even made media news is because it's Shaq. He's using it to boost his ego, and he needs an ego boost since his season has been absolutely pitiful. If this was a real street cop, you wouldn't find this in the papers. What a joke. Focus on your basketball health and getting back to playing shape Shaq, not your law enforcement "career".

Funny. I can totally picture that too
actually, its in the media because its a superstar doing a good thing for the community. a crime was committed, hes a police officer, he did his job. what would you be saying if someone like kobe or bynum did this? you'd probably be praising them.

I would criticize Kobe and Bynum both for going after such a petty crime (granted, cases of hit and runs can be severe...this particular case was petty). Right now isn't the time to focus on his police career, he's still an NBA superstar and his team is crap right now. They're the reigning NBA champions, but they're playing like the Warriors. Shaq should be focused on one thing...improving his conditioning so he can get the Heat back to a respectable level.

Someone crashed into his freaking car, he went after them and got them apprehended. It isn't like this severely hindered his chances to get his team better. I bet you would do the same thing if this happened while you just came home from "work"(he just came from a Heat game apparently). "Hey Shaq, someone crashed into your car bro. You gonna do something?" "Naw, Big Daddy gotta go lift weights because 10 minutes to catch that guy is entirely too much time to take off my workout schedule".
Sure, I would go after them, but would I have the Miami Heat Organization release this news to the press? No, it's selfish. For someone who is embarrassed about the franchise right now, this sure doesn't show it. Good for him, he got the guy who hit his car. Like Shaq can't afford to fix the damage? There was a reason this wasn't released by Miami P.D., it's not important. This was released for props and media attention, not because he apprehended a hit and run violator.
Well it's not everyday an NBA player catches a drunk driver hitting the car and arrests him. Seriously, if this happened to any superstar or well known player, it would make the news. Obviously, this wouldn't make the news (or atleast the headlines it did with Shaq) if it happened to a unknown police offer. Shaq is a celeb and one of the most well known people in the world, so of course it's going to make the news. I really don't know how you can tell him to focus on basketball in this situation. Someone hits his escalade, what do you want him to do? Ignore it and go to the gym and workout and practice free throws? He has the ability to catch and arrest the person who hit his car, so why ignore it and rely on someone else to handle the situation? Shaq himself said that he kept a safe distance and speed and contacted police officers along the way. And what's so bad about talking through the team? This information was made available by the newspaper but Shaq provided detail information through the team rather than going out himself and doing so. I really don't see anything wrong with that. You're looking into this way too deep.
SHAQ IS A SNITCH; SNITCHES GET STITCHEZ!11111111 I had to say that before someone else did, so they would see how stupid it is.
Hmm I don't know how this is such a noble deed. The guy hit Shaq's car, I'm sure he was just pissed about it.

I don't understand how people can hear this news and still make excuses blaming Shaq..

But I still don't see what the big deal is about this hit and run; it was his own car. No need to discuss this issue further.
