On nbadraft.net, they have his potential at an 8/10, compared for example compared to Nicholas Batum, while still having a lot of potential to be a very good player in this league, has a 9/10. I just needed to post this because it bugs me. Piss!!

Someone really needs to explain what the hype is around him. I've seen him play many times during the season, I've watched highlights, looked at his stats, and still I'm not convinced why everyone is so sold on him.

They say he's a PG, but his A/T ratio is below 1. I actually find him to be too scoring-oriented to be a PG; even since high school. They also say he's a great scorer, but despite playing 37 MPG, he averages 4.6 free throw attempts. He barely gets to the basket. I only see him crossover a few times and shoot a jumper - just like Jamal Crawford. It's actually rare to see Mayo get by his man and get to the basket. He's athletic, but his athleticism is not unbelievable. He's far from being the most athletic guard in this draft. People say he's so much more ready to play in the NBA than any other freshman, but neglect the fact he's a year older too. I find it peculiar how some people (not necessarily on this site) feel Mayo is a guaranteed star. IMO, he's done nothing to warrant the scrutiny/hype he's received since 7th grade. Someone like Eric Gordon for instance (who was actually rated higher than Mayo coming out of H.S.) is considered to have less potential than Mayo. Never mind he's more athletic, has better scoring instincts, and won't bring any type of attitude or shenanigans to the table.

All I want to know really is why is Mayo so hyped up?

hater!!!...lol...just playing. The topic of the conversation was about Mayo over Batum...not against the word...lol.

But to defend Mayo a lil I will say a few things. The low free-throw attempt is directly tied into the system he was playing in college. He was put into the position of PG to facilitate and wasn't expected to drive, but dish it inside.
My feelings toward how NBA ready he is has to do with his size and his mental state. Being hyped for so long he is already comfortable with press and the pressures that come with the extra attention...making him more marketable (which means alot in today's NBA) and through all this he has the menality to get better every year...with all the hype he is still the first in the gym and the last to leave and has proven that he is willling to work to improve the parts of his game that needs and has the ability to improve. These are things that really matter that don't show up on a shuttle or vert. score at a combine.

As for Gordon, sure he's stronger and more athletic...don't get me wrong, he's gonna be a great scorer in the League and I like his game, but you can't say you can overlook how he seemingly cashed out when his coach issues arised and slumped the rest of the season. he didn't show the willingness or the ability to put his team on his shoulders and get them into games (in a weak Big 10, mind you). And although Mayo's USC squad didn't make it past the opening round he did get them there (after being critized for a slow start to his college career) all in a much tougher PAC-10.

Athleticism isn't everything...will, dedication and heart count for alot and when it's wrapped up in a package such as Mayo...it could be something special.

You can fault Gordon for his size, but for not being able to "put his team on his shoulders"? That's excessive. I don't think you understand what a coach's identity is to a major college basketball program like Indiana. You change the coaching staff, and you change the team completely. It's not like the NBA where coaches change every other week. In the NCAA, a coach is a team's rock. They define the style the team plays, the type of players that suit up, the team's attitude, etc. Just look at what guys like Tom Izzo and Mark Few do to the players they recruit. To lose Sampson midseason killed the Hoosiers' chances of postseason success right off the bat. Secondly, you realize that Gordon injured his lower back and his wrist down the stretch of the season, right? His slump wasn't just freshman gitters, and it wasn't even completely because of Sampson's departure. He couldn't shoot properly because he was playing through injuries. As for the Big Ten being weak, that's a misnomer. They were far from weak, they were just top-heavy. I'd pit teams like Michigan State, Purdue, and the nation's most underrated team last season, Wisconsin, against any other team in the nation.

I understand the importance of a coach, but to melt down like he did, can't be overlooked. I understand players get hurt, but that didn't stop Oden from doing his thing with a case on his shooting hand and pretty much baning inside while learning to use his left hand...he had to learn to shot FT with his left for pete's sake!
I wasn't saying Big 10 is weak as a sign of disrespect...I'm from Minesota so I'm a huge Gopher fan...but the teams there last year were weaker than before...
Like I stated before...I like Gordon's game and would love him on my team, I just respond to previous comments, nothing else
