Looking to purchase a 1/2 ton pick up 2009-2016. I will be pulling a 4500b tt. Ford, GMC, Chevy, Ram, Tundra,Ridegline? Looking to purchase a deer hunting Rifle. 270, 308, 30-06 or 7mm? Going to take wife to beach? Seaside, Cannon Beach, Lincoln City, Newport, Florence? Thanks for your honest opinions? Rip City
Tundra. I don't tow and don't know the specs. I do know that my buddy beats the everloving piss out of his Tundra and nothing phases it.
I spend a fair amount of time at the coast, so my 2 cents worth is.......if you’re slumming (and your wife doesn’t mind a good dive bar) I recommend Pacific City. But for a very nice weekend of good food and gorgeous scenery I seriously recommend staying in Yachats, with a day allotted to wandering down to Florence. Yachats has wonderfully flat (and hard packed) beaches that go on forever....and are usually virtually deserted at any time of the year. And as mentioned, some wonderful restaurants. Florence has good shops and restaurants without the crowds that plague the northern part of the coast (and the coastline between the two cities is awesome, with Cape Perpetua and Devil’s Churn in between). Florence is a smaller and quieter version of Newport. Yachats and Florence are a longer drive but very well worth it.
I just got a 2017 F150 and it's great. It handles like a car, but it has all the power, room, and hauling ability of a truck. If you want a decent bush gun for the coast, my Marlin 30-30 is amazing. You don't even need a scope. Deadly accurate, nice compact size, no magazine to worry about. If you want something for longer range, I have a Remington 30-06 that I love. It has a five round mag, semi-auto, extremely reliable and very accurate. If you want a bolt action, it's hard to beat the Remington .308. For the beach, I have been going to Arch Cape since I was a little kid. It's about 5 minutes from Cannon Beach. It's about 10-15 from Manzanita. About 20 minutes from Seaside. It's quiet, peaceful, not very crowded, and there's plenty of rentals in the area.
Keep FULL coverage on that thing for as long as you have it. Had one at work that had a rear tire blow. 20 grand. Looked like a grenade went off in the wheel well
The bedsides could cut you walking by. Got the back door and the cab corner too. Aluminum. Expensive.
I wish I had a picture. It looked like this but centered over the wheel. And worse. I wish I still worked where I did when I saw it so I could get pictures. Don't ever run old tires or suspect tires on one of those. https://www.ford-trucks.com/articles/some-of-your-theories-as-to-what-happened-with-this-truck/
Thanks Gents... Im leaning towards F150 with 5.0 geared for trailer 3:72 Tundra is awfully proud of their trucks! Over priced? 30-06...Ive had a 308 geez louise !
Yahatz sounds good! Thanks 1967 I raced a Camaro on the beach at Pacific City with my 58 Impala/348/Power Glide. The Camaro fished tailed so much I went straight and pulled ahead at the head. 1/4 Many a great times at that beach! Shorts Sands too....
Had an 88 Ford 250, and I don't trust Fords. But it was all I could get with a manual Trany on a quick purchase at the time. When I move to Bandon from my ranch in NE Oregon, I had about 5000 pound in the bed and about 10,000 on a tandem axle trailer. Blew the right rear tire off the truck on I 80 heading west at about 70. Damn good I had stabilizer bars on the tow and trailer brakes set for non skid. A light touch on the brakes, energized the trailer brakes and it brought the rig to a nice controlled stop. Blew the 8 ply tire clear off the rim and while it was at it, it took the whole right panel off the Ford Bed. I forgot the tire manufacture, but I got them at Les Swab. Took the rig to one of their shops and they contacted the tire company. They paid to replace the side of the Ford. Have 2004 Chevy now. Blew the same tire off it with a heavy load of Boat material. No damage to the Chevy, the wheel well got a couple bulges but not too bad, it contained the slap of that tire coming apart. Enough noise to make a man mess his pants, but no real damage.
F150- I’m looking to trade in my old Dodge Powerwagon and get one to pull a light 1 horse trailer sometime next year. (Both the truck and trailer are my fiancé’s) 30-06 and I love Tikka. Price is decent and I can perfectly repeat distance shots better with that then any other rifle I’ve tried. However, I’m not very experienced so take my recommendation with a grain of salt. Yahatz or if you want to step into bigger bucks and stay north I love gearhart.
The Honda would be seriously strained towing your load on steep hills, as would a Tacoma or Colorado. I'd suggest also trying out a Nissan Titan. All good deer rifles but the 30.06 is the clear winner here. Best (sunny and warm) weather is Florence, Newport. Best storm watching and rental houses is Yachats. Best beach probably Cannon.
For the money you'd spend on a newer 1/2 ton I'd personally get a slightly older diesel with a comparable price. Especially for towing. Diesels get a terrible rep and I don't know why. They are more fuel efficient, cleaner burning and infinitely more powerful. And they run forever. You could also look into one of the newer 1/2 ton eco diesels tho. They've got a 6 cylinder diesel engine that tows great. And you get the comfort of a 1/2 ton suspension.
