A report today indicates that Okafur, who is a restricted free agent, has been unable to reach an agreement with Charlotte and is (or might be?) requesting a sign-and-trade in order to receive a longer contract.

The Nets could clearly send back enough salary to make something work. Let's say Okafur was signed to a four year, $45 million deal, which isn't horrible. The Nets could package some combination of Swift, Hassell, Ager, Sean, and/or an S&T Krstic. That would give Charlotte a $6 million expiring contract, plus a young kid with potential (Sean or Krstic).

--Would that deal make the Nets playoff contenders?
--Should the Nets do it, even if they had to sign Okafur to a four-year deal?

    Oh boy, another Huskie . . .

    1) Yes, I think that would make the Nets playoff contenders, but we wouldn't go far, which leads to point #2) No, we shouldn't do it.

    My brief and straightforward take.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Celtic Fan @ Jul 22 2008, 01:53 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}></div><div class='quotemain'>see my reply to the Marion trade idea.. pretty much sums it up here too.

    http://sportstwo.com/forums/Marion-New-Jersey-t120122.html</div>

Okafur is not a star, nor will he ever be one. Marion, on the other hand, is a dominant player. They are not analogous at all. The Nets traded RJ--a borderline less-than-all-star--for a young kid with potential, a decent veteran swingman, and cap relief. I believe that the Nets got a decent return for RJ in this environment, and I don't think that Okafur is worth any more that that. The Nets can similarly offer a young kid with tremendous upside (Sean), a decent veteran swingman (Hassell), and salary relief (in the form of Swift's expiring contract). I added Krstic because it is possible that Charlotte prefers him, in which case I assume that the Nets would have to substitute Ager for Hassell. I think it is fair.

If we hadn't made the trade for Yi, I would be open to this move. But I really want a chance to see what Yi can do after a year to acclimate himself to American culture and language and on a team with guards that like to pass. I would hate to bring in another player that demands time at the 4 and would retard Yi's development.

Also, I think Boone offers enough of what Okafur offers that it's less appealing to trade for him unless Boone himself were moved.

BTW if we're gonna have an injury prone bigman i'd rather have Nenad. There was a time I would kick myself for even thinking that but seriously Meka's pretty damn fragile and a far crappier free throw shooter.

    Correction Dumpy,
It IS Reganomics...if he is referring to the Economic Framework of Linda Blair's character in the first Exorcist.

that second point is a very good one.

I'm still skeptical on the first one. When are you going to paint a picture of Vince?

You really think Rod would move Vince when he is the only ticket draw and or bridge to Bron Bron 2010? Really?
There aren't that many rabid, ticket buying Chinese fans, nor is the Ryan Anderson fan club that large yet.

Haha I was half kidding. I really do need to rock a VC painting, it's definitely long overdue.
