Troy Murphy is that strangely memorable kid from high school with the awkward manner and the goofy face who seemed to switch from class clown to sage savant in seconds. He hummed a stupid tune in the corridors, couldn't do the math and smiled such a wildly incoherent smile that you just knew he would turn into Elvis or Alan Greenspan. Mike Brey, the first-year coach at Notre Dame, experienced that singularly un-cozy feeling of weird-out upon taking the Irish job last summer. "You're getting a helluva basketball player in Murphy," Villanova coach Steve Lappas told Brey. "But, you understand, my players think the guy is absolutely crazy."

This is an old article from the notre dame days. He may be portrayed as weird, but he's one tough mofo. And although he's kind of slow changing direction when he moves on challenging defenders, he's pretty fast when he's driving the lane or running down the floor.

I remember reading that article when it first came out...it's just a great article.

By the way, Murphy had 34 points and 11 rebounds in an 83-73 win over St. Johns in that February 5th game.

That's cool. I want to see Murphy in the low post next year. If he stays healthy he could be pretty good posting up smaller power forwards. I mean that's one of the advantages of having a jump shooting power forward that is also heavy and tall enough to score the easiest points up close. I don't know if he could ever become a good shotblocker. He'll get like one block every other game on average like Jrich.
