The Open de España (formerly the Spanish Open) is the national open golf championship of Spain. It was founded in 1912 and has been part of the European Tour's schedule since the inception of the Tour in 1972. Except for a five year period in the early 1980s, the tournament has been played in April or May. In 2005 it was one of five European Tour events to be held in Spain. Distinguished former champions include Arnold Palmer, Seve Ballesteros, Bernhard Langer, and Nick Faldo.

    Gonzalez leads as Monty fumes

The Argentinian carded a 65 as he continued his love affair with Spain and the Real Club course where he won the 2004 Seville Open.

"I love the country, the people, the food, everything, it's like being home," he said.

"Today I loved the course again. The rough is sometimes like the US Open rough and the key to my round was only going in it three times."

Gonzalez, who birdied five of the last six holes in the Scandinavian Masters final round last year to win his fourth European Tour title, leads by a stroke from Briton Paul Waring.

Englishman Waring, ranked 356th in the world, finished up practising for the Spanish Open at a friend's golf club in the Middle East.

Randhawa, Kapur miss cut in Open de Espana golf

Jyoti Randhawa and Shiv Kapur missed the halfway cut after rather disappointing second rounds at the Open de Espana at the Real Club de Golf here.

Randhawa shot a second round 72 but still missed the cut by one, while Kapur too shot a 72 but his first round 77 ended his hopes on Friday.

Alvaro Quiros wins Open de España

Alvaro Quiros became the first home winner of the Spanish Open since Sergio Garcia in 2002 by beating England's James Morrison in a playoff at Real Club de Golf de Sevilla.

The long-hitting 27-year-old was the highest ranked player in the field and he lived up to his billing as favourite, claiming his fourth European Tour title.

Quiros began the final round trailing another Englishman Mark Foster by three strokes but that deficit was quickly lessened to one as the Spaniard made two birdies on the front nine. Foster dropped away with two bogeys on the run for home though he remained in a host of players who had the chance to take the title right up to the tournament's climax.
