"In our sun-down perambulations, of late, through the outer parts of Brooklyn, we have observed several parties of youngsters playing “base”, a certain game of ball…. Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our close rooms…. The game of ball is glorious." Walt Whitman....July 23, 1846 ..."We're born again, there's new grass on the field".
The thing that always bugged me about the opening season is they play today & then they're off tomorrow. You wait 6 months to play a season & you need a day off after the 1st game. Every year its the same thing. makes no sense. On a sour note: after today's beautiful weather they're expecting rain in NY over the next 3-4 days so already we can expect a rain out or two in the 1st week. I hope I'm wrong.
...the "day off after opening day" is in place for a reason. It has to do with maximizing revenue and it also helps to aid people who bought tickets for "opening day" in the event of a rainout. ...also where the term "rain check" gained popularity.
Nice Post 59, very nice indeed. I've always loved Walt Whitman's work.......hard to believe he walked door to door selling his books at one point in time. The Fogerty CF tune is a great one, always has been...........even his earlier work, CCR......
