<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">FORT MILL - Simply stated, Matt Carroll gets it.

He knows playing time is essential to a sustained NBA career. He knows the Charlotte Bobcats have playing time and value him after a call-up from the NBA's developmental league last season.

So when Bobcats coach/general manager Bernie Bickerstaff asked Carroll to play on the team's summer-league team, Carroll didn't flinch. Other free agents might have declined, concerned about potential injury or poor performance, but Carroll made a statement.

"If he had any inclination that he wanted me in summer league, then I was going to come," Carroll said Friday. "Whether my agent or anyone else didn't want me to come, it didn't matter. It was my decision."

Message received. On Thursday, Bickerstaff praised Carroll's "loyalty" and said re-signing him was a priority. Carroll can't sign a contract until July 22 or 23, but he plans to play in Salt Lake City with the Bobcats starting July 15.

A 6-foot-6 shooting guard, Carroll signed in late February, after playing most of the winter with the NBDL's Roanoke (Va.) Dazzle. The Bobcats knew he had shooting range (33 percent from 3-point line). But his knack for drawing fouls off the drive (83 free throws in 25 games) was a surprise.

By the end of the season Carroll was well inside the rotation, playing 19 or more minutes in five of the last six games.

Carroll played briefly for San Antonio in the 2003-04 season, and Spurs coach Gregg Popovich told him it was essential that he find a team offering steady minutes. Carroll didn't anticipate that being an NBDL team, but he says it preserved his career.

So Carroll favors a new rule, which will allow NBA teams to assign players with less than two years of experience to the NBDL.</div>

I for one hope Carroll stays..he's certainly better than Jason "no defense" Kapono and has a brighter future here.

Yeah, I hope the Bobcats can trade Kapono to a team in dire need of a shooter for like a future second round pick or something (maybe the Cavs can take him again? [IMG] ).
