Both gaurd spots could use some upgrading. The rockets havent really mentioned anyone that they can fill at these positions (now that simmons is gone), so what do you guys think we should do here? There are a lot of choices out there, dickau, jason williams, bonzi wells, earl watson, buckner, spreewell, stoudamire, jaric, jay williams, and so on.
I don't think there's going to be any drastic upgrades in the offseason as far as guards go. Dawson's probably focusing on powerforwards right now but I definitely see some trades coming along the way that might include guards. Out of the guards out there I can see us possibly landing and I like are maybe Dickau and Bonzi Wells. Dickau can be the cheap playmaker that we need and he has enough offensive ability to put up the points that we need. Wells on the other hand can be the third option that Houston needs to draw attention off role players and the dynamic duo but the problem is I'm not sure why it takes to trade for him. It would probably include trading James or Sura which would end up with us being on a shortage of point guards. There's probably tons more out there but I just think of them off the top of my head. However, some guys I definitely don't like on that list are Buckner, Sprewell, and Stoudemire. Buckner is a offfensive liability, plain and simple. I've seen him play at Philadelphia and he is absolutely horrendous as far as shooting goes. Kind of like a Ryan Bowen mold. Stoudemire I have ranted about a lot so I won't go into detail. He's not a playmaker, demands the ball too much, and a defensive liability. Sprewell is a headcase and he's aging, I just don't want him on the team. Jaric and Watson's stock are too high so I doubt we'll be able to snag them.
Maybe a change of scenery would be good for Wells. He was not motivated under Fratello and if Van Gundy can bring him back to his Portland form, we'd have a potential Most-Improved Player. However, I don't think that the Rockets would go after Wells. I don't think the team would look to purposely strengthen the one as well. The drafting of Head seems to have ended all future moves in the summer at point guard, unless we get into a deal where we give up one of our PGs and get one in return.
