NEW YORK -- The Yankees took advantage of a lucky late fielding miscue as the go-ahead runs scored on a seventh-inning error, providing enough support to make a winner of Javier Vazquez in a 3-1 victory over the Orioles on Tuesday.

Alex Rodriguez greeted reliever David Hernandez with a sharp ground ball to third base. Miguel Tejada's throw bounced and Ty Wigginton was unable to scoop it, allowing Derek Jeter and Nick Swisher to score as the ball rolled toward right field.

The play was a stroke of good fortune for the Yankees, who managed little other than Curtis Granderson's fifth-inning home run -- his third as a Yankee -- off starter Brian Matusz, who scattered six hits, walked three and struck out five.

But Vazquez handled the Orioles just as efficiently, getting another confidence boost. The right-hander blanked Baltimore into the sixth inning, when he and Francisco Cervelli couldn't agree on a pitch to Corey Patterson. After three shake-offs, the call Vazquez made was the wrong one, as Patterson belted a game-tying drive into the second deck in right field.

The Orioles put pressure on Vazquez in the seventh, as Wigginton reached on a fielder's-choice grounder and Luke Scott doubled to right. The Yankees intentionally loaded the bases, and Vazquez got the next two outs to strand three. Vazquez walked one and struck out seven, allowing only four hits.

New York also missed a prime opportunity in the sixth inning, as Matusz worked out of a first-and-third, none-out jam. Matusz got Marcus Thames and Cervelli to pop up on the infield before catching Granderson looking at a third strike.

Wasn't the most stylish win, but hey, I'll take it.

Also great to see Vasquez pitching well.

A win is a win. That's all that matters.
