Police on Wednesday arrested an Oregon State University freshman suspected of kidnapping a hotel worker at gunpoint in Newport and then going on a late-night drive with her handcuffed in the back of his car. Cedar A. Haddad, 19, faces kidnapping, menacing and coercion charges in connection with the twisted weekend abduction, the Newport Police Department said. "He wanted to point a gun at a person to put them in fear," police said Haddad admitted after he was taken into custody, court records show. Steve Clark, an OSU spokesman, told The Oregonian/OregonLive the suspect is a current student and has been enrolled at the university since last fall. Authorities said Haddad, a computer engineering student, rolled up to the Inn at Nye Beach just before 3 a.m. Saturday and strolled into the lobby wearing a Nike hoodie, his hands stuffed into a pair of white beach shorts. The suspect then whipped out a handgun replica and pointed it at an on duty female employee, 26, who dropped to the ground and started screaming, court records show. Haddad told the woman he had only planned to rob her, according to a probable cause affidavit. But since she shouted he now needed to kidnap her, the affidavit shows. The suspect then dragged the terrified woman three blocks to his car, where he handcuffed her and threw her in the backseat, police said. For the next 90 minutes police say Haddad drove around the Newport area with the restrained woman, making several stops at South Beach State Park and Seal Rock before heading back to town. He eventually ditched her in a residential neighborhood and sped off, authorities said. Surveillance footage and tips from the public eventually led police to Haddad's off-campus residence in Corvallis, police and OSU officials said.
