wow.. its hard to imagine that a league could allow a team to spend almost $400 million on 3 players. Its just a sad state for baseball as a casual fan.
The NBA was pretty popular when the Celtics won the championship almost every year. I think that MLB will be fine, too. Ed O.
MIXUM, it would help if you provided a link, and explained what you are talking about. I haven't been following baseball, so I have no idea what you're referring to.
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3790141 The Yankees signed Mark Teixeira to an 8 year, $180m deal. They had earlier signed CC Sabathia (7 years, $161m) and A.J. Burnett (5 years, $82.5m) to large deals this winter. Is the system broken? Maybe. But I'd rather have the Yankees spending the money they bring in than pocket it (although the owners would be justified in doing that). I just wish I were a Yankees fan. Ed O.
I think I saw that the Yanks have an even lesser payroll this year compared to last year, so they had the room to spend if they wanted to. But the fact that they can outspend for one player than an entire franchise like KC or Oakland can spend on their entire payroll is just a joke in itself.
Because you can't buy World Series titles these days. They won them in the late 90s/2000 thanks to good scouting/player development. He meant in recent history. Since 2001, when their blindfolded, drunken shopping spree began.
Exactly. Thank you. I have to admit, the Yanks spending all that money over the last few years and not winning anything is really satisfying.
That's the way I look at it too. I hate the Yankees but watching them spend all that money and not win the World Series is very satisfying.
If KC/Pittsburgh/Rays/etc. spent even just the amount of money they get from baseball for revenue sharing on salaries/development/scouting/etc., I'd feel bad for them. But since they don't, I don't care for their owners saying a word. I feel bad for their fans, but the fans continue to support lining the owners' pockets for a crappy product. That's on them. I root fervently against the Yankees, but they're doing good things with the cash they get in.
Baseball is a joke because it takes a bazillion hours to play a game. Steroids didn't help either. And yeah... Yanks suck but since we have a rich owner who is willing to pay $$$ for players... I am not going to say a word. I used to be a huge baseball fan. This past year I didn't watch a single game the entire year... playoffs included.
I guess baseball has really fallen off my radar, I've never heard of any of those three guys. Years ago, I was acquainted with two major leaguers, my only brush with sports fame. In those days, I followed the game. And I was obsessive about it as a kid. Now I couldn't tell you who won the world series last year. Oh well. barfo
The players are the game, and they should take away the bulk of the profit assuming there is profit. Why no outcry to limit the salary of the manager, coach, or executive staff? Baseball is the ultimate team sport, played by the ultimate athletes.
