Franklin can barely afford to take all the SAT's how is he gonna pay for college now On the other hand I'm screwed as well. Gotta get some Cal Grants...
There was a protest here at UCSC yesterday where students tried to block people from getting on and off campus. Really fucked up a lot of people's days and accomplished nothing. The problem isn't so much with the UC Regents as it is with the state of California. When the UC system was started it was designed to be VERY affordable- meaning the state payed up to get people through the system. It was truly public education. I'm not sure when but some time in the last 30 years or so a CA bill was passed which dictated that the state would pay less and less to UC's- thus fees for students increased steadily in the UC system to compensate. And even with the increases in fees students are only paying a fraction of the cost it actually takes to put a student through college. You see private universities with ~$35,000 a year tuition and think they're absurdly priced but I believe they actually aren't making very much at all off of this number. UC students are freaking out at paying 10 grand and change (BTW that number doesn't include the cost of living which, here at UCSC at least, brings the total up over 25 K typically). I'm not saying the people who run the UC system aren't corrupt assholes but many people can't seem to grasp the concept that there is no money and its a state problem first and foremost. If you want to keep fees the same you need to elect CA politicians who will vote to give more money to UC's. However thats not going to happen because vast majority of voters don't give a shit about UC kids having to pay up for college. It sucks ass but we're in a fucking recession and people need to finally come to grips with the fact that CA is financially fucked. Deal with it. I keep hearing students telling me how poor they are and how they won't be able to continue going to school. If you're so poor and paying your own way through school then you mus know what a LOAN is and how they work. They're not hard to get and CA is still handing out tons of grants and loans through FAFSA. If you're a fucking UCLA student no banks are going to turn you down for a loan unless your credit is already fucked. We live in a recession. The state has been neglecting us and Arnold has been busting his ass to take away what financial help we have and there's not much we can do about it. The state we live in is financially incompetent. The general public does not give a shit about this issue. It sucks but that's life. Shit happens. I feel bad for the people who are fucked but with my experiences with FAFSA and CA financial aid they usually hook it up with whatever you need to get out of college (with debt obviously).
Yup, the recession sucks. Money has to come from somewhere and us students are the ones who will have to pay it. I know there's always options to get loans, but damn I don't want to spend the rest of my life try to pay off college... I wish college education was free in the US. Isn't it free in Europe?
People with a college education make 1 million more in their lifetime than non- college grads on average. It'll suck to be in debt but in the long run you're better off. Plus tons of people who've been going to private schools are already doing it. Sucks that we're the first in the UC system to pay more but shit happens.
Yeah I know, I'm definitely going to college, and a UC. I just hate the fact that we have to be hit so hard in the wallet.
It's a scheme to keep you in debt IMO. Colleges increase tuition knowing students can get more government assistance, which you must pay back once you graduate. Actually I think they recently passed a law you have to start paying the interest while you're still in school? The trend for people taking classes online will continue.
It should be free. I don't think education should be profit driven. However, the reason it's free in France is because of the high tax citizens pay. They get taxed 50%. There's also a lot of bureaucracy in their school systems. If you don't pass the entrance exam you don't get to go to University. You also can't switch your choice of majors at French Universities like you can in the US.
Only one teacher from my school was in that thing lol. This past summer at the end of July they tacked on a couple hundred dollar fee, but didn't send out an email about it. If you didn't pay the fee within 2 weeks of its posting, all the classes that you registered for and held a spot for, they would drop. Alot of people got screwed.
